Стипендиантски семинар: Археология на бойното поле от времето на османското нашествие: Релеф, наследство и памет

14 март @ 16:30 - 18:00

Petar Parvanov (MON Fellow, Oct ‘23 – Jul ‘24) will make his second presentation on:

Battlefield Archaeology of the Ottoman Conquest: Landscape, Heritage, Memory

on 14 March 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h.

Abstract: The Ottoman conquest of the Balkans has often been a dramatic grand narrative for national histories in the region. The current project refocuses the attention on the sites and locations where the historical processes took place. With few early exceptions, the sites of military engagement were left largely unexplored by archaeological means. These conflict landscapes are conceptualized through the tools of battlefield archaeology. In my project I try to reassess earlier research and cultural management practices applied to these specific foci of historical interaction and offer a more theoretically-informed understanding of their significance. The presentation will further examine patterns of site formation and heritage-making linked to several specific battles such as the battles of Maritsa (AD1371) and Nicopolis (AD1396). The comparative approach will highlight the functional and dysfunctional use of landscapes by the combatants and later communities and commemorative groups. The appropriation of space where mass violence was performed coincides with various projections of identity and ideologically-motivated messages over the immediate and long-term consequences of the individual battles.

Moderated by Candan Badem.
