Стипендиантски семинар: Паметта за Втората световна война в съвременна Украйна

1 февруари @ 16:30 - 18:30

Ihor Dvorkin (SUS Fellowship, Oct ‘23 – Feb ‘24) will present his research on:

Memory of 2nd World War in Contemporary Ukraine

01 February (Thursday), at 16:30 h.

Moderated by Petar Parvanov.

Abstract: In the conditions of Russia’s contemporary war against Ukraine, the memory of the Second World War, the previous destructive war on the territory of Ukraine, becomes even more relevant for the state, scientists, and the public. The Euromaidan revolution and the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 significantly influenced the rethinking of many aspects of the history of the Second World War. The full-scale invasion of Russia gave impetus to further rethinking of the events of the Second World War by the Ukrainian society. The presentation will focus on the following issues:
– Soviet heritage and post-Soviet realities. The “Great Patriotic War” vs the Second World War. What were the politics of memory in Ukraine before 2014?
– What was the impact of the Euromaidan and the Russian aggression (2014) on the politics of memory and the politics of history?
– “Sites of memory” dedicated to war in a Ukrainian city: Soviet and post-Soviet. Is such combination possible in urban space?
– The World War on the pages of textbooks: before and after 2014/2022. The new highlights.
