ACLS,\u00a0in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS),\u00a0will\u00a0convene\u00a0leading scholars from Eastern Europe and North America for a two-week residency in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria,\u202ffrom\u202f<strong>June\u00a02, 2027,\u00a0to June 18, 2027<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">SISECSE will also provide participating scholars with the opportunity to undertake local fieldwork, including archival or\u00a0collections\u00a0research, interviews, site surveys, or other forms of data collection. Fieldwork is not a requirement for participation.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>This program is\u202fmade possible thanks to a generous donation by Carl and Betty Pforzheimer.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-details\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Details<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The program will offer a stipend for travel to and from Bulgaria and cover accommodation and per diem expenses for the two-week residency. The travel stipend amount is based on your institutional affiliation location at the time of application.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Participating scholars will be expected to be in residence and to take part in all planned events for the duration of the institute.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Participating scholars may undertake local fieldwork, including archival or\u00a0collections\u00a0research, interviews, site surveys, and other forms of data collection.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">There will be at least one weekend group trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h-discussions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Discussions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will have the opportunity to\u00a0participate\u00a0in a series of discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In 2027, the institute\u2019s discussions will explore \u201cRethinking Spaces and Scales: Beyond the East-West Dichotomy.\u201d\u00a0The 2027 Institute seeks to critically engage with the spatial and scalar frameworks that define East Central and Southeastern Europe, moving beyond the conventional geopolitical and cultural dichotomies that have traditionally separated \u201cEast\u201d and \u201cWest.\u201d Contemporary geopolitical shifts, transnational democratic\u00a0challenges,\u00a0post-Cold War economic and cultural realignments,\u00a0and\u00a0other transforming\u00a0social\u00a0developments\u00a0have steadily eroded traditional divisions,\u00a0rendering\u00a0the frameworks that depend on them increasingly obsolete.
