The goal of the NETWORK is to nurture research in this<br \/>\nfield in a comparative perspective and in view of the <em>longue dur&eacute;e<\/em><br \/>\nrelevance of the monastic tradition for economic culture. The NETWORK<br \/>\nsupports the creation of a scholarly community by fostering intellectual<br \/>\ndebates, facilitating contacts and mobility, and bringing together<br \/>\nacademics from different thematic and institutional backgrounds. Its<br \/>\nfirst workshop was organized and hosted by CAS on November 10-12, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This Call is addressed to candidates willing to join the NETWORK. Part<br \/>\nof its budget (2017-2019) is allocated to the granting on a competitive<br \/>\nbasis of <strong>RESEARCH ALLOWANCES<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nResearch tools eligible for funding include:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Single (up to one month) or multiple (totaling up to one month)<br \/>\n\tresearch stays abroad or in the home country (including travel costs,<br \/>\n\taccommodation, per-diem)<\/li>\n<li>Organization of small seminars<\/li>\n<li>Invitation of eminent scholars in the field for guest lectures<\/li>\n<li>Handling of archival materials, images and databases<\/li>\n<li>Monastic case studies (research visits to specific monasteries; interviews&hellip;)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Conference\/Workshop attendance (participation fees; travel costs&hellip;)<\/li>\n<li>Other (proposed by the applicant)<\/li>\n<li>Publication costs are not eligible. \n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe relevant <strong>areas of research<\/strong> include, but are not<br \/>\nlimited to, topics such as: Economic activities of the monasteries;<br \/>\nMonastic economy and market (capitalist) rationality; Relations with the<br \/>\nState (including confiscations of monastic assets); Flow of financial<br \/>\nfunds in the monastic economy; Wealth management; Governance; Economy of<br \/>\nthe Holy Mountain (Mt. Athos) and other monastic sanctuaries. The <strong>time frame<\/strong> covers medieval, pre-modern and modern history as well as current trends in a longue dur&eacute;e historical perspective. The <strong>geographical coverage<\/strong><br \/>\ncomprises the Orthodox realm in South-Eastern Europe (Albania,<br \/>\nBulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, FYRO Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia,<br \/>\nthe institution of the Constantinople Patriarchate) and the<br \/>\nCatholic\/Protestant domain in the Western Balkans (Croatia, Slovenia)<br \/>\nand Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates soliciting support may apply for particular tool(s) which<br \/>\nis\/are explicitly related to a broader project or an already structured<br \/>\nacademic initiative in the field of monastic economy. The application in<br \/>\nEnglish should contain an estimation of the costs and a working plan.<br \/>\nSingle project&rsquo;s funding cannot exceed 3&nbsp;000 euro per year. Continuation<br \/>\nof funding is possible pending a new application.\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/v1\/files\/CAS-Monasteries\/NETWORK Monastic economy - Application_Form RESEARCH ALLOWANCES.doc\">APPLICATION FORM<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe <strong>selection procedure<\/strong>, to be organized by CAS,<br \/>\nincludes anonymous reviews by two senior scholars invited by the Centre<br \/>\nand a member of CAS&rsquo; academic staff. It is based on three core criteria:<br \/>\nscientific excellence; relevance of the proposal; qualification of the<br \/>\ncandidate. The appropriateness of the budget is also evaluated. <\/p>\n<p>There are no deadlines for the submission of applications. The<br \/>\nconsecutive evaluation sessions start: February 1, 2018; July 1, 2018;<br \/>\nJanuary 1, 2019; July 1, 2019. The selected projects are announced<br \/>\nwithin a month. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The spending of the Research allowances is subject to strict <strong>accountability<\/strong>.<br \/>\nUpon approval of the application, the grantee signs a contract with<br \/>\nCAS. He\/She is liable to present a report about his\/her research<br \/>\nactivities (in English or in French) including, as well, the original<br \/>\ndocuments testifying the incurred expenses.
