Gandzak is situated on the Western edges of the Caspian plains, which were<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">largely Islamized by the 8th century. Facing the hardly accessible ravines of the Lesser Caucasus,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which from the 14th century were known as Karabagh, Gandzak durably remained a north-western<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">outpost of Islam, hosting successive waves of Arabic, Kurdish, Turkic, and Mongol settlers. The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">proximity of the Armenian highlands explains how, notwithstanding the ongoing assimilation to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the city\u2019s Muslim majority, the Christian population of Gandzak could continuously be sustained<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and maintain its cultural and religious identity. We shall focus on the activity and writings of the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Armenian ecclesiastical author David of Gandzak, which afford a lens through which to observe<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cultural interaction in these marchlands between the Armenian plateau and the Caspian plains<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">during the first decades of the Turkic colonisation of the lowlands. David\u2019s \u201cAdmonitory<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Exhortations,\u201d which do not easily fit into any known category of historical documents, have but<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">very seldom been used as a source of this crucial moment in the history of the South Caucasus.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">They contain, in particular, rare information concerning the relationships between the Muslim<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">population of Gandzak and their Christian inhabitants, as well as instances of cultural blending and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">religious syncretism. Such phenomena<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">comparable in many respects to those which would later <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">occur in the Balkans<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have largely determined the history of the South Caucasus during the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">subsequent centuries. The analysis of these phenomena allows us to gain a deeper understanding<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of the reciprocal perceptions of the region\u2019s diverse ethnic and religious groups. Attesting the wide <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">spread of intermarriages and shared veneration of holy places, David\u2019s work sheds light on the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">process of the Islamization not only of the Caucasus but also of Anatolia<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IGOR DORFMANN-LAZAREV<\/strong> (PhD, Habil.) teaches Oriental languages at Sofia University.
