SUMMARY:Fellow seminar: The Thracians in Ptolemaic Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Vessela Atanassova (BG-Swiss Fellowships for Bulgarian Junior Scholars\, Oct ‘26 – Jul ‘27) will introduce the first stage of her research on: \nThe Thracians in Ptolemaic Egypt\n29 October 2026 (Thursday)\, 16:30 h. \nAbstract: The broader Mediterranean region witnessed the development of some of the most important cultures of the past\, one of the reasons being the facilitation of trade and cross-cultural exchanges afforded by the Mediterranean Sea. Exchanges were made at the level of goods as well as modes of thought. The Thracians were among the peoples who moved within this world. From the late fourth century BC\, and especially after Alexander the Great’s conquest of Egypt in 332 BC\, Thracians reached Egypt and settled there permanently. \nSome of them rose remarkably high. A stele with an agonistic catalogue (SEG XXVII 1114)\, probably from Herakleopolis and dated to 8 March 267 BC\, records a Thracian called Amadokos\, who had both the means to organise games in honour of the king’s birthday and the permission to call them Basileia. Evidence of this kind suggests that Thracians stood on the same social level as the Greeks\, a relatively privileged position in Egyptian society\, and it considerably enriches the scarce record of the early phase of Thracian immigration to Egypt. \nThis lecture presents the existing evidence for their presence and outlines the directions of a new research project. The project will examine the mechanisms\, extent and impact of the Thracian diaspora in Ptolemaic Egypt. \nModerator: Halit Serkan Simen
