DESCRIPTION:Petar Parvanov (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Jul ‘24) will make his second presentation on: \nBattlefield Archaeology of the Ottoman Conquest: Landscape\, Heritage\, Memory\non 14 March 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nAbstract: The Ottoman conquest of the Balkans has often been a dramatic grand narrative for national histories in the region. The current project refocuses the attention on the sites and locations where the historical processes took place. With few early exceptions\, the sites of military engagement were left largely unexplored by archaeological means. These conflict landscapes are conceptualized through the tools of battlefield archaeology. In my project I try to reassess earlier research and cultural management practices applied to these specific foci of historical interaction and offer a more theoretically-informed understanding of their significance. The presentation will further examine patterns of site formation and heritage-making linked to several specific battles such as the battles of Maritsa (AD1371) and Nicopolis (AD1396). The comparative approach will highlight the functional and dysfunctional use of landscapes by the combatants and later communities and commemorative groups. The appropriation of space where mass violence was performed coincides with various projections of identity and ideologically-motivated messages over the immediate and long-term consequences of the individual battles. \nModerated by Candan Badem.

DESCRIPTION:Kim Holleman (Landis & Gyr Artistic Fellow Oct ‘23 – Feb ‘24) \nFuture City: Art\, Utopian Architecture\, and Critical Research\non 22 February 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Liliana Milkova. \nAbstract: “Future City: Art\, Utopian Architecture\, and Critical Research” encapsulates an artistic project that delves into the realms of art\, architecture\, and urban development. This multidisciplinary endeavor seeks to reimagine our urban spaces with an imaginative blend of creativity and critical inquiry\, ultimately envisioning a more sustainable and harmonious urban future. \nThe term “utopian architecture” invites us to dream beyond the confines of practicality and imagine what our cities could be in an ideal world. This project delves into utopian architectural concepts\, where buildings are not just functional but also serve as expressions of ecological harmony\, innovation\, and human well-being. It rethinks architectural design to prioritize sustainability\, green spaces\, and coexistence with nature. \nThis project is firmly grounded in critical research and intellectual inquiry. It involves rigorous investigation into the cultural\, and environmental contexts of urban spaces. Through critical research\, it aims to uncover the challenges and opportunities that shape our cities. By delving deep into the past and present\, it informs the artistic creations with an understanding of the complex forces at play in urban development. The project delves into Sofia’s urban fabric\, reimagining its iconic landmarks and urban spaces as potential canvases for utopian architecture. \nTogether\, these elements converge to create a holistic exploration of “Future City.” It challenges us to think beyond the present and consider the possibilities that lie ahead. It prompts us to ask critical questions about the role of art and architecture in shaping our urban environments\, particularly in the context of pressing environmental concerns.

DESCRIPTION:Liliana Milkova (Diaspora MON Fellow\, Jan ‘24 – Mar ‘24) will present to the fellow group her research on: \nThe Pedagogic Power of Art: Teaching with Museum Collections across the University Curriculum\non 15 February (Thursday)\, 16:30 h. \nModerated by Kim Holleman. \nAbstract: \nLiliana Milkova\, Ph.D.\, Yale University Art Gallery \nIn the last thirty years\, campus art museums in the U.S. have grown increasingly relevant to university curricula and become active contributors to higher education. Collection-based teaching has gained momentum through the development and integration of effective art-based pedagogies across disciplines as varied as biology\, computer science\, history\, literature\, music\, and neuroscience. Research demonstrates that thoughtfully designed learning experiences with art can pique student interest in any course subject\, facilitate deep learning and connection-making\, strengthen specific skills and thinking dispositions\, as well as cultivate perspective-taking and celebrate diversity. In this presentation I focus on the theory and practice of teaching with original works of art\, highlighting specific examples from my extensive professional practice and arguing for art’s place in today’s university curriculum. My project’s broader goal is to situate museums as valuable educational partners to faculty and students in any field\, but also to university leaders and administrators\, and further to offer accessible entry points into the range of interdisciplinary teaching and learning possibilities that a museum collection readily affords. \n– \nPhotograph by Jessica Smolinski\, courtesy of the Yale University Art Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Ihor Dvorkin (SUS Fellowship\, Oct ‘23 – Feb ‘24) will present his research on: \nMemory of 2nd World War in Contemporary Ukraine\n01 February (Thursday)\, at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Petar Parvanov. \nAbstract: In the conditions of Russia’s contemporary war against Ukraine\, the memory of the Second World War\, the previous destructive war on the territory of Ukraine\, becomes even more relevant for the state\, scientists\, and the public. The Euromaidan revolution and the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 significantly influenced the rethinking of many aspects of the history of the Second World War. The full-scale invasion of Russia gave impetus to further rethinking of the events of the Second World War by the Ukrainian society. The presentation will focus on the following issues:\n– Soviet heritage and post-Soviet realities. The “Great Patriotic War” vs the Second World War. What were the politics of memory in Ukraine before 2014?\n– What was the impact of the Euromaidan and the Russian aggression (2014) on the politics of memory and the politics of history?\n– “Sites of memory” dedicated to war in a Ukrainian city: Soviet and post-Soviet. Is such combination possible in urban space?\n– The World War on the pages of textbooks: before and after 2014/2022. The new highlights.

DESCRIPTION:Blake Smith (Advanced Academia Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Feb ‘24) will give a talk on: \nRoland Barthes and Julia Kristeva’s Personal Turn\, 1975-1983\non 25 January (Thursday)\, at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Nadezhda Alexandrova. \nAbstract: Roland Barthes and Julia Kristeva\, after years of close collaboration with each other as leading figures on the French intellectual scene\, broke with the idiosyncratic avant-garde form of leftism that they had belonged to for the past decade. Mao and revolution were out; the United States and a ‘second liberalism’ were in. Alongside this shift towards the center\, if not the right\, both Barthes and Kristeva declared that politics needed to be rethought from the position of individual subjects and their intimate experience–particularly the experience of romantic love (or its absence). My presentation will briefly situate Barthes and Kristeva’s trajectories leading up to this shift\, and then explore their ideas on the political importance of love\, reflecting both on their historical context and present-day philosophical interest.

The protection of Ukraine’s Russian speakers was among the pretexts for the 2014 Russian invasion as well as the full-scale war unleashed by Russia in 2022. Russia’s claims of authority over the speakers of Russian have been based on simplistic equations of language and national identification. To show that these speculations bear little resemblance to how the things stand on the ground\, Ukrainians have started the process of linguistic conversion. The years following the 2014 Russian invasion have seen a growing shift to Ukrainian from Russian whereby language choice is perceived as a social action with an existential effect. My project is an ethnographic study of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine who are involved in linguistic conversion. I concentrate primarily on those individuals who are switching to Ukrainian from Russian within grassroots Ukrainian language initiatives. Besides the motivations behind their language choice\, I explore the reasons prompting them to invest in the language learning\, as well as the process of education. I aim to establish the role of the war in the mass transition to Ukrainian from Russian\, define its impact on Ukrainian language pedagogy\, and also cast light upon the transformation of identities in eastern Ukraine.

DESCRIPTION:Veneta Ivanova (Diaspora MON Fellow\, Nov ‘23 – Jan ‘24) is presenting on: \nThe Unmaking of the Intellectual: A Social and Cultural History of Postsocialism in Bulgaria\non 11 January 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Victor Petrov \nAbstract: “The Unmaking of the Intellectual” explores how Bulgarian intellectuals – writers\, poets\, artists\, philosophers\, academics\, theater and film directors – experienced first the liberal-intellectual\, and then the social revolution engendered by the transition from state socialism to neoliberal capitalism. It traces the shifting roles of the intelligentsia from the mid-1980s to the first decade of the 21st century\, with a particular focus on the early years of the transition when emblematic public intellectuals entered politics and assumed key positions of power (such as head of state\, vice president\, members of parliament\, and leaders of political parties). \nParadoxically\, while intellectuals were instrumental to the demise of communism and main protagonists of the transition\, by the beginning of the twenty-first century\, they became culturally and socially marginalized. My project explores the conditions – local\, regional and global – that led to this marginalization\, together with its outcomes. \nI will weave an economic analysis of the impact of the new market economy on intellectual and artistic production\, together with a cultural analysis of intellectual and artistic reactions to the social\, cultural and political transformations of the 1990s. Based on diaries\, memoirs\, publications in the press and oral interviews\, this project seeks to understand how the marginalization of the intelligentsia has affected not only post-1989 cultural and intellectual life\, but also social and political mobilization. Capturing the particular experiences of Bulgarian socialist intelligentsia under post-socialism\, I seek to make broader theoretical arguments about the entanglement between cultural producers\, social engagement and political impact in the twenty-first century.

DESCRIPTION:Petar Parvanov (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Jul ‘24) will give his first talk on: \nBattlefield Archaeology of the Ottoman Conquest: Landscape\, Heritage\, Memory\non 14 December (Thursday)\, at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Ivo Strahilov. \nAbstract: Nothing quite captures the historical imagination like warfare. And very few stories of conquest can match the Ottoman military expansion from Gallipoli to Vienna and its consolidation of power over the Balkan peninsula. The long-term cultural impact combined with the immediate political and social consequences of individual conflicts are a defining part of the heritage in the region. Considering the accumulation of victories by the new non-Christian power\, the international repercussions of the Ottoman conquest were immediately recognized in the medieval period. Even today\, the national narratives in the post-Ottoman world evoke strong reactions among professionals and the wider public alike. \nWith few early exceptions\, the sites of military engagement were left largely unexplored by archaeological means. In my project I try to reassess earlier research and cultural management practices applied to these specific foci of historical interaction and offer a more theoretically-informed understanding of their significance. \nIn this talk I will outline the conceptual and methodological basis of my project as well as offering some preliminary findings. The approach will be illustrated with a detailed case study on the battle near Varna in AD1444. The battle is best known for the defeat of the crusade forces and the death of the Polish-Hungarian king Vladislav. Today\, a memorial park in the name of the deceased king is dedicated to these events.

DESCRIPTION:Strahil Panayotov (Pforzheimer Senior Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Feb ‘24) shall talk about his research project on: \nComparative and interdisciplinary analyses of medical texts concerning coughing of phlegm: from the second Millennium BCE Mesopotamia\, over Ashurbanipal to Hippocrates\n7 December 2023 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dragos Năstăsoiu. \nThe winter fits Strahil’s talk. Who has not experienced people with cough-phlegm\, lately? \nMy presentation will take the audience on a text critical journey of the most-ancient history of phlegm cough\, as recorded in textual sources. I will present first the sources A)\, which will be followed by chosen cases of a textual critical scrutiny B): \nA) I identified and deciphered unpublished cuneiform tablet from the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. Surprisingly\, the Middle Babylonian text (ca. 1500-1200 BCE) turned out to be a forerunner to a medical treatise on Bronchial complaints from the Nineveh Medical Encyclopedia. The latter is the foremost collection of therapeutic writings from the Ashurbanipal Royal Library (7th century BCE)\, and the most important compendium of medical literature before Hippocrates. Moreover\, cuneiform therapies against coughing phlegm as recorded on the Baghdad tablet bear unmistakable similarities to practices from the Hippocratic Corpus (post 4th century BCE). \nB) The comparative and interdisciplinary scrutiny of the sources mentioned above offers a unique perspective for medical historians\, since we can now comprehend that medical therapies for phlegm-cough\, as recorded in the Graeco-Roman world\, were already in use in the Ancient Near East\, even during the 2nd Millennium BCE. This aligns with recent discoveries in Babylonian Medicine\, Astronomy and Mathematics\, showing that knowledge\, which was recorded by the Ancient Greeks has in fact equivalents in earlier cuneiform.

DESCRIPTION:Mikhail Maslovskiy (Gerda Henkel Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Dec ‘23) will talk on the theme: \nFellow Seminar: Historical Sociology\, International Relations and Russian Civilizational Politics\non 23 November\, 2023 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Volodymyr Bureha. \nAbstract: The research project deals with contemporary civilizational analysis in historical sociology and new perspectives on civilizational politics in the field of international relations. Shmuel Eisenstadt’s and Johann Arnason’s revival of civilizational analysis has largely contributed to a critical diagnosis of the present world constellation. At the same time\, the relevance of sociological civilizational analysis for the discipline of international relations has been discussed. While contemporary historical sociology devotes considerable attention to civilizational legacies in today’s world the research program of civilizational politics in international relations regards civilizations as discursive constructs and focuses on the ways in which political imaginaries become institutionalized. Apparently\, these perspectives can be seen as complementary. Within the discipline of international relations there is a growing interest towards the political dynamics of ‘civilizational states’ including China and Russia. In particular\, it has been demonstrated that the Russian political elite use civilizational rhetoric in order to justify a wide range of policy decisions. However\, current discussions of Russian ‘civilizationism’ are characterized by selective appropriation of insights from new approaches in international relations and general neglect of the findings of historical sociology. The project evaluates recent research on civilizational aspects of Russian politics and stresses the need to reconsider this issue taking into account the contributions of sociological civilizational analysis.

DESCRIPTION:Victor Petrov (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘23 – Jul ‘24) will make his second presentation on: \nStar Citizens: Alternative Knowledge\, Science\, and the Search for Meaning in Post-Socialist Bulgaria\non 14 March\, 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Michiel Meeusen. \nAbstract: This project investigates the post-socialist boom in ‘phenomena’ in Bulgaria. In 1990\, the Bulgarian army started digging for something near Sofia\, led by a platoon of clairvoyants. In 1995\, thousands flocked to the Ruse airport to await ‘star ambassadors’ from Cepheus. Meanwhile\, seers and healers proliferated throughout the nation\, flocking to well known mystics such as Vanga but also many newly famous one. Media sensations made household names of poltergeists; publishing and media industries made household names of newly minted alternative histories of the Bulgarians\, who were premier ‘star citizens’\, imbued with special knowledge. To what extent were such phenomena and their social reception an expression of the newly democratized field of knowledge production and media spectacles? Or were they a reaction to a loss of meaning and disenchantment with worldly utopian projects – both the failed communism and the endlessly receding transition to capitalism? Who could claim truth and how did they defend it? This project combines the histories of late socialism with new research into the post-socialist period to explore the intersection of official and unofficial science and knowledge-making communities. Utilizing archival documents\, analysis of literature\, digital tools\, and oral history\, it aims to uncover the role of socialist science and narratives in the shaping of post-1989 narratives around Bulgarian ‘uniqueness’ but also esoteric expectations about spirits\, energies\, and aliens.

The project examines the dynamics of heritage-making\, knowledge construction and interactions of heritage and politics in contemporary Bulgaria. Through ethnographic research of three recent Bulgarian-French exhibitions at the Louvre Museum in Paris\, focusing on Thracian\, Bulgarian Medieval and Ottoman past\, it seeks to highlight the interdependencies and hierarchies between various heritage layers ascribed to different historical periods. While these layers are often presented collectively as a rich and specific cultural mosaic\, they tend to remain obscured within the overarching concept of the ‘crossroad of civilisations’. By unpacking this assemblage to study distinct heritage layers separately and comparatively\, the project unveils significant disparities in their valorisations\, thus revealing existing dominant discourses and cultural conventions. These processes of (de-)heritagisation are further examined within the regional and wider European contexts in order to better situate national heritage politics within the ‘global hierarchy of value’ (Herzfeld 2003) and explore to what extent and how nationally produced ideas of heritage and their manifestations relate to\, reinforce or contest the notions of Europe’s core and periphery.

\nНатали Клейе ще представи темата \nWriting post-imperial state-building in a new way. The case of Albania (1920-1939)\nРезюме: How to capture and understand the Albanian state-building process during the Interwar and post-imperial transformation of its social spaces? The idea is to make as a snapshot movement\, not fixing the lens on the institutions as we usually observe them\, nor fixing it only on the trajectories of individuals that would show the importance of infra- or transnational dynamics\, but making the „camera“ constantly moving in order to follow the process in its movement to better grasp the complexity of the dynamics at play of a „state in society“ in the making. \n\nНедим Рабич ще представи темата \nContemporary Perceptions of the Middle Ages in Bosnia and Herzegovina\nРезюме: The Middle Ages used to be more important than right now. In recent decades\, it has largely disappeared from the programs of state-supported institutions in Central and Western Europe\, as well as from political slogans. However\, in the Balkans\, the Middle Ages are more relevant than ever. \nIn Bosnia and Herzegovina\, the Middle Ages made a big comeback in political discourse right before the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The motive for such a lecture is primarily the growing interest in the Middle Ages in the last years among all three dominant nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this lecture\, I will try to point out the possible reasons as well as their manifestations in the public space.

DESCRIPTION:Zbigniew Wojnowski (Advanced Academia Fellow\, Jun ’22 – Jul ’22) will give his talk on: \nPop Music in the USSR – Show Business and the Advent of Capitalism\non 06 July\, 2023 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Martin Valkov. \nThis presentation explores the life and posthumous commemoration of the pop musician Volodymyr Ivasiuk. Although Ivasiuk promoted his Ukrainian-language music on Soviet radio and television in the 1970s\, he turned into a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to Soviet rule after his premature death. I will argue that this anti-Soviet turn in Ukrainian popular culture was a rebellion against state-sponsored emotional norms.

Gandzak is situated on the Western edges of the Caspian plains\, which were largely Islamized by the 8th century. Facing the hardly accessible ravines of the Lesser Caucasus\, which from the 14th century were known as Karabagh\, Gandzak durably remained a north-western outpost of Islam\, hosting successive waves of Arabic\, Kurdish\, Turkic\, and Mongol settlers. The proximity of the Armenian highlands explains how\, notwithstanding the ongoing assimilation to the city’s Muslim majority\, the Christian population of Gandzak could continuously be sustained and maintain its cultural and religious identity. We shall focus on the activity and writings of the Armenian ecclesiastical author David of Gandzak\, which afford a lens through which to observe cultural interaction in these marchlands between the Armenian plateau and the Caspian plains during the first decades of the Turkic colonisation of the lowlands. David’s “Admonitory Exhortations\,” which do not easily fit into any known category of historical documents\, have but very seldom been used as a source of this crucial moment in the history of the South Caucasus. They contain\, in particular\, rare information concerning the relationships between the Muslim population of Gandzak and their Christian inhabitants\, as well as instances of cultural blending and religious syncretism. Such phenomena—comparable in many respects to those which would later occur in the Balkans—have largely determined the history of the South Caucasus during the subsequent centuries. The analysis of these phenomena allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the reciprocal perceptions of the region’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. Attesting the wide spread of intermarriages and shared veneration of holy places\, David’s work sheds light on the process of the Islamization not only of the Caucasus but also of Anatolia. \nIGOR DORFMANN-LAZAREV (PhD\, Habil.) teaches Oriental languages at Sofia University.

\nAbstract: Notwithstanding the fact that the ideological framework of Balkan nationalism as well as it’s implications in the redrawing of the political boundaries in the Balkans have been intensively studied\, the way nations perceived events which led to ideological crisis and/or had disastrous consequences for their expansionist policies undermining their Great Ideas still remains overlooked. By the same token\, equivalently unexplored is the issue of a comparative approach with respect to analyzing how nations that shared common paths in their national-building process perceived their national catastrophes. In this respect\, this project will attempt to shed light on the vacillations of Greek and Bulgarian national narratives in periods of national disaster\, that is the second Bulgarian national disaster of 1919 and the Greek national disaster of 1922\, also known as the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The research\, which is mostly based upon analysis of the Bulgarian and Greek press\, focuses on two main aspects; the intranational and the comparative approach. The intranational approach will attempt to answer the following questions: A) Do national catastrophes have the same starting point in both Greek and Bulgarian as case studies? B) According to the definition we gave above\, does the national catastrophe have the same features in both cases? C) Are there any signs of internalization or externalization of the national catastrophe? D) The emotional reactions with regard to the national catastrophe was instant or lasting? \nBased on the results of this intranational research the comparative approach will detect convergences and divergences in the way Greeks and Bulgarians perceived their national catastrophes.
