DESCRIPTION:Dr. Georgios Chatzelis (Advanced Academia Fellow\, Oct ‘21 – Feb ‘22) will present his research project on the topic: \nStratagems and the Byzantine Culture of War: Theory\, Practice\, Report\, Reception and Cross-Cultural Exchanges with the Muslim world\non 25 November\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dr. Mariana Bodnaruk. \nThe project studies stratagems and the Byzantine culture of war c. 800-1204. It focuses on Byzantine attitudes towards stratagems\, and examines cross-cultural exchanges between the Byzantines and the Muslims\, by exploring case studies of intertextual relationships and similarities/differences in the conduct of war when similar stratagems occur in Byzantine and Arab literature. The presentation will provide an overview of the project’s objectives and methodologies and it will evaluate preliminary results with regard to Byzantine attitudes towards stratagems. These attitudes will mainly be examined through the prism of historical contextualization\, comparative and discourse analysis. Special emphasis will be put on primary sources which are largely neglected by current scholarship (e.g.\, the Bible and its exegesis\, hagiography\, iconography\, legal treatises\, rhetorical handbooks and orations). These will then be compared with more traditional sources for the study of military history\, such as historical narratives and military manuals. The presentation will conclude with observations on how the different cultural backgrounds of the Byzantine empire\, the Classical\, the Jewish\, and the Christian\, contested and fed into each other\, and ultimately\, how they shaped Byzantine attitudes towards military ethics and trickery.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Delyan Rusev (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘21 – Jun ‘22) will give his introductory talk on the topic: \nImagining One’s Own Infidel: Ottoman Muslim Accounts of Balkan Non-Muslims\, 15th–17th Century\non 11 November\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dr. Georgios Chatzelis. \nThe research project focuses on a hitherto understudied facet of Christian-Muslim relations in a premodern setting\, namely the discourses on Balkan non-Muslims in Ottoman Muslim narrative sources produced between the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries. It aims to look beyond the rather static legalistic façade of Ottoman society and the social roles ascribed to the various groups of Ottoman subjects through religious (sharia) and secular (kanun) law by analyzing how and why images of the other were formed and transmitted in Muslim writings of the time as well as what forms of sociocultural interactions did they reflect. Of particular interest is the role that authors attributed to ethnicity and its\ninterrelation with religious and other identities\, including the notion of “Ruminess” embraced by the Ottoman learned elite. \nBesides an outline of the main research questions and aims\, this preliminary presentation will offer an overview of the primary sources of the study. These include a wide range of partly unpublished texts in Ottoman Turkish and Persian\, which can be conditionally segregated into the categories of history\, hagiography\, geography\, and travel accounts. Both their specifics and intertextuality will be highlighted with regard to the image of the “own infidel”. Beyond their generic distinction\, the sources will be approached via a complex methodology involving historical contextualization\, discourse analysis\, and textual criticism. Two case studies will be presented in order to illustrate this approach as applied to a particular work and a particular term respectively.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Evlogi Stanchev (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘21 – Jun ‘22) will give his introductory talk on the topic: \nThe Diasporic Experience (Re)Considered: Idioms of Belonging and Transborder Ethnic Kinship within Crimean Tatars in Bulgaria\non 04 November\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Prof. Angel Nikolov. \nThe project aims to reconsider – both theoretically and empirically – the concept of the ‘diaspora’ through investigating how it is experienced in the particular case of the present-day Crimean Tatar community in Bulgaria. The main research objective is to analyze to what extent the sense of transborder ethnic kinship with other Crimean Tatars from abroad (mainly Romania) defines Tatar identity among that local community. Therefore\, a special emphasis shall be placed on the collective notions and narratives about Crimea as an imagined ‘common homeland\,’ thus\, its role as a reference point for experiencing Tatarlık (lit. ‘Tatarness’). Furthermore\, of utmost significance for the project is to clarify the various representations about ‘other\,’ i.e.\, non-Crimean Tatars around Eurasia (Volga\, Siberian\, Astrakhan\, etc.) within the group under consideration. \nThe research tackles the concept of ‘diaspora’ and its various theoretical and methodological contradictions through a reflexive\, context-sensitive approach. Within the field of social sciences\, the ‘diaspora’ (and its derivatives\, e.g. ‘diasporic community\,’ ‘diasporic identity\,’ etc.) is usually characterized by inertia\, as it is defined once-and-for-all\, without making further clarifications on its internal ambiguities. This situation poses the risk of methodological essentialization and\, thus\, semantic blurring of the concept. Therefore\, dealing with a local and often neglected case – Bulgaria’s Crimean Tatars and their identity – the current research aims to reconsider the ‘diaspora’ phenomenon in accordance with the latest theoretical achievements of social sciences\, as well as some thorough empirical insights. \nMethodologically\, the project will adhere to an elastic interdisciplinary approach\, using some relevant observations from various academic fields (social anthropology\, sociology\, history)\, as well as subfields (identity studies\, nationalism studies\, etc.). The study will rely heavily upon conducting ethnographic fieldwork to gain relevant information about current dynamics concerning Crimean Tatar identity. Thus\, the biographical research method is of crucial importance here because\, as recent fieldwork of the author showed\, among many respondents\, the ‘Tatarness’ is evoked mainly as a ‘family memory’ and is inextricably related with genealogical references. As most of the works on the subject offer a non-analytical historical overview or are of descriptive ethnographic character\, the research will do its best to fill the considerable gaps in the academic literature so far.

\nРезюме на английски: \nThe research project focuses on understanding diversity (and wider topics of inclusion\, representation\, participation and equality) in the context of judicial legitimacy and the rule of law in Europe. The concept of ‘diversity’ generally refers to a practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of backgrounds\, and while it is commonly paid lip service\, it also attracts controversy\, as it often challenges the status quo and existing distributions of power. \nThe project aims to inspect and document the ways in which diversity considerations have been acknowledged as relevant for\, or even incorporated in\, the functioning and legitimacy of European courts. It will examine the relevant factors\, justifications\, limits and effects of diversity in relation to judicial legitimacy and the rule of law. In order to achieve this\, it will draw on a wide variety of sources to grasp the extent of this multidimensional issue in a comprehensive way. In view of the focus on the implications of diversity in courts for judicial legitimacy and the rule of law\, however\, the discussion will be primarily situated in the discursive context of equality/equity\, procedural and normative legitimacy and the rule of law. This requires not only a descriptive but also normative engagement with the topic with a view on potential policy implications of research results. The presentation will outline the main elements of my project’s research plan as well as present some of the results acquired to date.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elitza Stanoeva (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘21 – Jun ‘22) will give introductory talk on the topic: \nFellows Seminar: Architects and Heritage Demolition in Late Socialism and After: Politics of History versus Politics of Profession\non 21 October\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dr. Aneta Vassileva. \nThis presentation will outline my project’s research agenda and case studies along with its hypotheses\, types of sources and research questions. The project investigates how architects responded to politically dictated demolition of architectural heritage in Sofia and Plovdiv\, Bulgaria’s largest cities\, in two periods: late socialism when the relics of the ‘bourgeois-monarchic era’ were still subjected to ‘socialist reconstruction’\, and post-1989 transition when socialist landmarks became targets of ‘decommunization’ and ‘visual lustration’. At the focus of my study is a dual politicization of architectural heritage: obliteration triggered by memory politics and expert advocacy for preservation. I analyze the latter through the lens of politics of profession\, i.e. as part of a coherent vision of both a harmonious city and the architect’s role in its production. My working hypothesis is that architectural heritage was a stake in architects’ quest for reclaiming expert agency and public relevance before and after 1989\, tackled in conjunction with larger professional themes and urban problems: issues of authorship and collegial solidarity; problems of environmental and social deterioration; questions of cultural identity and historical value. The project methodology is discourse analysis of the following types of primary sources: (1) stenographic records of discussions within architects’ organizations\, specialized architectural journals and architects’ publications in mass media; (2) state decrees and programs related to urban (re)planning; (3) changing legal definitions and conservation procedures concerning material heritage and cultural monuments.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Competing Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lyubomir Pozharliev (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘20 – Jun ‘21) will give his second talk on the progress of his research at CAS on the topic: \nCompeting Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)\nHe will present more details on \nThe Case of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (ROPiT)\n29 April\, 2021 at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Prof. Roumen Avramov. \n– \nAbstract \nThis presentation is focused on the development of transport infrastructure and shipping in the Black Sea region by examining the case study of the establishment and initial development of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (ROPiT) from 1856 to the end of the 19th century. ROPiT was a joint-stock company co-owned by private entrepreneurs and the state. As the main problem of the study is the interrelation between a state-constructed public interest and private interests of entrepreneurs in the development of the Black sea maritime infrastructure\, the focus of the presentation will be the relationship between Russian state imperial interests and the economic interests of the entrepreneurs and merchants\, shareholders in ROPiT. The presenter follows Thomas Hughes’s understanding of infrastructure as large technological systems\, whose components are not only physical artifacts but also organizations\, knowledge\, legislative artifacts\, etc. In that aspect the presentation will introduce the concept of systemic actors – they are those\, who imagine the construction of the infrastructure as a system project. The following questions will be discussed: How did the foundation and development of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company become possible – in terms of context and initiators? What were the strategies for developing maritime infrastructure of the entrepreneurs and of the representatives of the state\, what was the relationship between state and private interests? The biographies of the two key actors\, Nikolaj Arkas (the defender of the imperial interests) and Nikolaj Novosel’skij (the representative of the entrepreneurs) are placed in the middle of the investigation. Both were founders and first directors of ROPiT and had an access to multiple resources – mobility\, networks\, knowledge\, political support and more. The presentation will argue that Novosel’skij and Arkas could be defined as systemic actors and transcultural mediators. It also oppose the thesis that the development of the Russian Empire followed the „strong arm“ of centralized state power\, arguing that in the studied case the successful development of transport infrastructure resulted from a complex intertwining of both types of interests – imperial and entrepreneurial and of the systemic visions of its key actors.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Social Networks and Sofia Vernaculars at the Dawn of the Bulgarian National Language
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Grace E. Fielder (Advanced Academia Fellow\, Mar – July ‘21) will present her research under the topic: \nSocial Networks and Sofia Vernaculars at the Dawn of the Bulgarian National Language\non 8 April\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \n– \nAbstract \nThe current project is a historical sociolinguistic study of the spoken language of Sofia before and after 1879 when the newly formed government relocated from Veliko Tărnovo in the eastern dialect area to Sofia in the western dialect area. The goal is to both to document the language of literate speakers living in Sofia as well as investigate the social dynamics of the tension between the eastern and western variants during the process of standardization of Bulgarian in which the eastern dialect base eventually predominated. This then will be a language history “from below”\, i.e. an alternative language history of the vernacular language rather than the standard\, literary language as well as of marginalized speakers\, particularly women. Using written letters which are the best evidence available for oral speech in 19th century Sofia\, I use social network theory to examine the effect of social relationships on the maintenance of western vernacular features versus the adoption of the more socially prestigious eastern features of the standard language. It is hypothesized based on similar research on the Belfast vernacular by Milroy and on 15th century English by Bergs that strong (dense multiplex) network ties favor the maintenance of vernacular even stigmatized features while weak (loose\, uniplex) network ties lead to innovation and change. \nGrace E. Fielder is Professor Emerita in the Department of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Arizona. She holds a PhD in Slavic Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles and her research interests are in the historical and contemporary sociolinguistics of the Balkan languages. Recent publications include “The Semiotics of Ideology: the Bulgarian Definite Article Rule” (2019)\, “Takin’ it to the Streets: Language Ideology in post-1989 Bulgaria” (2019)\, “A Constellation of Greek Adversative Connectives?” (2019)\, and “Bible Translation and Language Recognition on Balkan Slavic Territory” (2018). Grace was also part of the team that translated Aleko Konstantinov’s Bai Ganyo: Incredible Tales of a Modern Bulgarian (2010) into English. She serves on the National Policy Advisory Committee for the Slavic and Eurasian Language Resource Center at Duke University and has held research grants from Fulbright\, IREX\, ACLS and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Psychotherapy\, Spirituality and the Inner Self: Post-Secular Subjectivities Among the Romanian Middle Class
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sorin Gog will present his research under the topic: \nPsychotherapy\, Spirituality and the Inner Self: Post-Secular Subjectivities Among the Romanian Middle Class\non 1 April\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dr. Vladimir Nakov \n– \nAbstract \nThe research project focuses on the emergence of spiritualized forms of psychotherapy and self-help psychologies that have become an important component of the booming industry of personal and spiritual growth in Romania and throughout Western and Eastern Europe and aims at analyzing the paradigmatic shift taking place in psychology and in psychotherapeutic practices that are employed in modeling a new form of subjectivity. By drawing on Michel Foucault’s\, Nikolas Rose’s and Charles Taylor’s work I am looking at how these emergent psychotherapies are producing bio-political technologies that attempt to governmentalize both old and new capitalist societies. I am interested in analyzing the way these new spiritual psychotherapies operate and how they generate a new subjective interiority based on self-development and self-realization and on a new understanding of personal authenticity that is becoming increasingly popular in Romania\, through academic and professional networks\, books\, digital media and public lectures and the establishment of new psychological associations. The embedding of spiritual practices in the psychotherapeutic counseling\, such as familial constellations\, Bowen therapy\, holotropic breathing\, various forms of meditation\, etc. signals an important shift in the way psychological healing of anxieties\, depressions or dysfunctionalities are conceptualized\, and the type of inner self that professionals cultivate. It is this spiritual-scientific mediation of subjectivity that becomes an important tool which is used by a growing segment of the Romanian middle class to transform itself and deal with the new challenges of contemporary society. Traditional religions are considered in this milieu a thing of the past – spiritualized psychotherapy opens the space for a new cosmopolite and scientific understanding of who we are as human beings and how can we live a successful\, prosperous and meaningful life. \nSorin Gog is a sociologist and anthropologist working at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca where he teaches courses on social theories\, methodology of sociological research and sociology of religion. He has been a research fellow at Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (Finland)\, CEU-IAS (Hungary)\, New Europe College (Romania)\, Institut für Wissenschaft der Menschen (Austria)\, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Germany) and University of Fribourg (Switzerland). His recent publication includes a co-edited volume on spirituality\, work and neo-liberalism\, titled ‘Spirituality\, Organization and Neoliberalism\, Understanding Lived Experiences’\, Edward Elgar\, published in 2020.

е Jean Monnet Title Holder.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: A Different Approach into the Philosophical Anthropology: Rethinking the Human through its Antonyms
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Christo Stoev will present his research proposal on the topic: \nA Different Approach into the Philosophical Anthropology: Rethinking the Human through its Antonyms\non on 25 February\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Asiya Bulatova \n– \nAbstract \nThe project builds on a simple thesis. In order to think through the human in general and to understand our own self-reflective cultural image as humans\, we need to consider what we comprehend as opposite or even just different from the human. So\, the main focus of the project will be analysis of the function of the antonyms that we have for the word human. These could be divided into two types: explicit and implicit antonyms. Explicit antonyms are formed with negative\nprefixes like non-\, un-\, in-\, anti-. The examples are: nonhuman\, unhuman\, inhumane\, antihuman. Implicit antonyms are not formed with prefixes and they do not share the same root as the word human. Examples could be: beast\, monster\, machine\, alien\, barbarian\, impure and so on. These implicit antonyms are interesting case because they are loaded with long cultural legacy. \nA special focus of the analysis will be devoted to the cases of the nonhuman and the inhumane. As suggested by the two very different words in English our intuitions in this semantic field are divided into two basic types. On one hand\, these are intuitions on that which the human is not (the nonhuman) and on the other hand intuitions on what the human should not be (the inhumane). These layers respectively reveal the descriptive and normative modes of our thinking on the human condition. The intuitions in question need to be philosophically conceptualized in order to understand their scope\, limits\, and claim to universality. Thus\, light can be thrown on the very recent theoretical conceptions that seem to question our commitment to the humanist ideas. This should provide a more clear-cut interpretation on what it means to strive for a trans-humanist or a post-humanist world.
