SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Competing Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lyubomir Pozharliev (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘20 – Jun ‘21) will give his second talk on the progress of his research at CAS on the topic: \nCompeting Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)\nHe will present more details on \nThe Case of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (ROPiT)\n29 April\, 2021 at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Prof. Roumen Avramov. \n– \nAbstract \nThis presentation is focused on the development of transport infrastructure and shipping in the Black Sea region by examining the case study of the establishment and initial development of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (ROPiT) from 1856 to the end of the 19th century. ROPiT was a joint-stock company co-owned by private entrepreneurs and the state. As the main problem of the study is the interrelation between a state-constructed public interest and private interests of entrepreneurs in the development of the Black sea maritime infrastructure\, the focus of the presentation will be the relationship between Russian state imperial interests and the economic interests of the entrepreneurs and merchants\, shareholders in ROPiT. The presenter follows Thomas Hughes’s understanding of infrastructure as large technological systems\, whose components are not only physical artifacts but also organizations\, knowledge\, legislative artifacts\, etc. In that aspect the presentation will introduce the concept of systemic actors – they are those\, who imagine the construction of the infrastructure as a system project. The following questions will be discussed: How did the foundation and development of the Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company become possible – in terms of context and initiators? What were the strategies for developing maritime infrastructure of the entrepreneurs and of the representatives of the state\, what was the relationship between state and private interests? The biographies of the two key actors\, Nikolaj Arkas (the defender of the imperial interests) and Nikolaj Novosel’skij (the representative of the entrepreneurs) are placed in the middle of the investigation. Both were founders and first directors of ROPiT and had an access to multiple resources – mobility\, networks\, knowledge\, political support and more. The presentation will argue that Novosel’skij and Arkas could be defined as systemic actors and transcultural mediators. It also oppose the thesis that the development of the Russian Empire followed the „strong arm“ of centralized state power\, arguing that in the studied case the successful development of transport infrastructure resulted from a complex intertwining of both types of interests – imperial and entrepreneurial and of the systemic visions of its key actors.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Social Networks and Sofia Vernaculars at the Dawn of the Bulgarian National Language
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Grace E. Fielder (Advanced Academia Fellow\, Mar – July ‘21) will present her research under the topic: \nSocial Networks and Sofia Vernaculars at the Dawn of the Bulgarian National Language\non 8 April\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \n– \nAbstract \nThe current project is a historical sociolinguistic study of the spoken language of Sofia before and after 1879 when the newly formed government relocated from Veliko Tărnovo in the eastern dialect area to Sofia in the western dialect area. The goal is to both to document the language of literate speakers living in Sofia as well as investigate the social dynamics of the tension between the eastern and western variants during the process of standardization of Bulgarian in which the eastern dialect base eventually predominated. This then will be a language history “from below”\, i.e. an alternative language history of the vernacular language rather than the standard\, literary language as well as of marginalized speakers\, particularly women. Using written letters which are the best evidence available for oral speech in 19th century Sofia\, I use social network theory to examine the effect of social relationships on the maintenance of western vernacular features versus the adoption of the more socially prestigious eastern features of the standard language. It is hypothesized based on similar research on the Belfast vernacular by Milroy and on 15th century English by Bergs that strong (dense multiplex) network ties favor the maintenance of vernacular even stigmatized features while weak (loose\, uniplex) network ties lead to innovation and change. \nGrace E. Fielder is Professor Emerita in the Department of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Arizona. She holds a PhD in Slavic Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles and her research interests are in the historical and contemporary sociolinguistics of the Balkan languages. Recent publications include “The Semiotics of Ideology: the Bulgarian Definite Article Rule” (2019)\, “Takin’ it to the Streets: Language Ideology in post-1989 Bulgaria” (2019)\, “A Constellation of Greek Adversative Connectives?” (2019)\, and “Bible Translation and Language Recognition on Balkan Slavic Territory” (2018). Grace was also part of the team that translated Aleko Konstantinov’s Bai Ganyo: Incredible Tales of a Modern Bulgarian (2010) into English. She serves on the National Policy Advisory Committee for the Slavic and Eurasian Language Resource Center at Duke University and has held research grants from Fulbright\, IREX\, ACLS and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Psychotherapy\, Spirituality and the Inner Self: Post-Secular Subjectivities Among the Romanian Middle Class
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sorin Gog will present his research under the topic: \nPsychotherapy\, Spirituality and the Inner Self: Post-Secular Subjectivities Among the Romanian Middle Class\non 1 April\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Dr. Vladimir Nakov \n– \nAbstract \nThe research project focuses on the emergence of spiritualized forms of psychotherapy and self-help psychologies that have become an important component of the booming industry of personal and spiritual growth in Romania and throughout Western and Eastern Europe and aims at analyzing the paradigmatic shift taking place in psychology and in psychotherapeutic practices that are employed in modeling a new form of subjectivity. By drawing on Michel Foucault’s\, Nikolas Rose’s and Charles Taylor’s work I am looking at how these emergent psychotherapies are producing bio-political technologies that attempt to governmentalize both old and new capitalist societies. I am interested in analyzing the way these new spiritual psychotherapies operate and how they generate a new subjective interiority based on self-development and self-realization and on a new understanding of personal authenticity that is becoming increasingly popular in Romania\, through academic and professional networks\, books\, digital media and public lectures and the establishment of new psychological associations. The embedding of spiritual practices in the psychotherapeutic counseling\, such as familial constellations\, Bowen therapy\, holotropic breathing\, various forms of meditation\, etc. signals an important shift in the way psychological healing of anxieties\, depressions or dysfunctionalities are conceptualized\, and the type of inner self that professionals cultivate. It is this spiritual-scientific mediation of subjectivity that becomes an important tool which is used by a growing segment of the Romanian middle class to transform itself and deal with the new challenges of contemporary society. Traditional religions are considered in this milieu a thing of the past – spiritualized psychotherapy opens the space for a new cosmopolite and scientific understanding of who we are as human beings and how can we live a successful\, prosperous and meaningful life. \nSorin Gog is a sociologist and anthropologist working at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca where he teaches courses on social theories\, methodology of sociological research and sociology of religion. He has been a research fellow at Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (Finland)\, CEU-IAS (Hungary)\, New Europe College (Romania)\, Institut für Wissenschaft der Menschen (Austria)\, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Germany) and University of Fribourg (Switzerland). His recent publication includes a co-edited volume on spirituality\, work and neo-liberalism\, titled ‘Spirituality\, Organization and Neoliberalism\, Understanding Lived Experiences’\, Edward Elgar\, published in 2020.

е Jean Monnet Title Holder.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: A Different Approach into the Philosophical Anthropology: Rethinking the Human through its Antonyms
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Christo Stoev will present his research proposal on the topic: \nA Different Approach into the Philosophical Anthropology: Rethinking the Human through its Antonyms\non on 25 February\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Asiya Bulatova \n– \nAbstract \nThe project builds on a simple thesis. In order to think through the human in general and to understand our own self-reflective cultural image as humans\, we need to consider what we comprehend as opposite or even just different from the human. So\, the main focus of the project will be analysis of the function of the antonyms that we have for the word human. These could be divided into two types: explicit and implicit antonyms. Explicit antonyms are formed with negative\nprefixes like non-\, un-\, in-\, anti-. The examples are: nonhuman\, unhuman\, inhumane\, antihuman. Implicit antonyms are not formed with prefixes and they do not share the same root as the word human. Examples could be: beast\, monster\, machine\, alien\, barbarian\, impure and so on. These implicit antonyms are interesting case because they are loaded with long cultural legacy. \nA special focus of the analysis will be devoted to the cases of the nonhuman and the inhumane. As suggested by the two very different words in English our intuitions in this semantic field are divided into two basic types. On one hand\, these are intuitions on that which the human is not (the nonhuman) and on the other hand intuitions on what the human should not be (the inhumane). These layers respectively reveal the descriptive and normative modes of our thinking on the human condition. The intuitions in question need to be philosophically conceptualized in order to understand their scope\, limits\, and claim to universality. Thus\, light can be thrown on the very recent theoretical conceptions that seem to question our commitment to the humanist ideas. This should provide a more clear-cut interpretation on what it means to strive for a trans-humanist or a post-humanist world.

SUMMARY:Fellow Seminar: Oath-Taking and Oath-Breaking in Byzantium
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Savvas Kyriakidis will present his research under the topic: \nOath-Taking and Oath-Breaking in Byzantium\non 28 January\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Vladimir Nakov \nAbstract \nOaths were one of the main mechanisms that sustained the legal\, economic and political structure of Byzantium. They played an important role in the cultural life of the Byzantine empire. The first part of this paper discusses the religious objections to swearing as they are expressed by early Christian and Patristic authors in the fourth and fifth centuries. Authors such as Gregory of Nazianzus and John the Chrysostom followed the New Testament’s rejection of oaths\, opposed what they considered excessive use of swearing and claimed that oaths do not prove the reliability of a person.\nThe second part of this presentation examines the description of oaths in law collections. The sixth-century Justinianic laws and the ninth-century Basilica describe in detail the large variety of oaths that were sworn in Byzantine courts and oath rituals. Moreover\, collections of decisions such as that of the Archbishop of Ohrid Demetrios Chomatenos provide important information on the use of oaths court and on the social background of those who swore.\nThe next part of this paper focuses on the use of alternatives to swearing. The thirteenth century saw the increasing appearance of the ordeal by hot iron and the threat of excommunication as replacement to oath rituals. I discuss the debate regarding the origins of the introduction of these customs to Byzantium and the reaction of Byzantine legal authorities.\nThe last part of this presentation discusses the concept of conspiracy in Byzantium. Emperors were wary of any type of oaths beyond their control. According to the eighth-century law collection Ecloga\, anyone who forms a faction or a conspiracy against the emperor should be punished by death. Byzantium did not see the development of sworn associations similar to those of Western Europe. Nevertheless\, all major conspiracies and rebellions against the throne involved the exchange of oaths between their leaders. \nShort Bio: Savvas Kyriakidis received his PhD from the University of Birmingham. He has been a post doctoral Fellow at Princeton University and twice a research fellow at the Research Centre for Anatolian Civilizations at Koc University in Istanbul. After spending four years as a Research Fellow at the University of Johannesburg\, he received research fellowships from the New Europe College at Bucharest and from the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library at Harvard University. He has taught at Sabanci at Koc Universities in Istanbul\, at the Open University of Cyprus and at the Open University of Greece.

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: A Possible Ally from the East: The Habsburg Intelligence and the Ottoman-Safavid Rivalry\, 1560s–1610s.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Aneliya Stoyanova will present his research proposal on the topic: \nA Possible Ally from the East: The Habsburg Intelligence and the Ottoman-Safavid Rivalry\, 1560s–1610s.\non 14 January\, 2021 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nAbstract \nThe project examines the dependencies in the triangle of bilateral relations between three of the leading powers of the Early modern era – the Ottomans\, the Safavids\, and the Habsburgs. The series of Ottoman-Safavid wars in the extremely vibrant period of the late 16 th and early 17 th century temporarily hindered the military activity of the Sublime Porte in the Mediterranean and Central Europe. They were hence beneficial for both branches of the Habsburg dynasty based in Vienna and Madrid – prime antagonists of the Ottoman advance to the West. Furthermore\, the perception of the Ottomans as a common enemy lead to ambitious plans for cooperation and anti-ottoman alliances between the Habsburgs and the Safavids. The project explores how the Imperial court in Vienna/Prague understood the Ottoman-Safavid rivalry and tried to take advantage of it. By examining written sources\, produced by the Habsburg court and its diplomatic network\, the research aims at outlining the degree of acquaintance with different aspects of the manifold bilateral relations between the two Muslim states and also at answering the question whether the Safavids were viewed as potential allies or rather as a convenient distraction of the enemy’s powers from the Western front. Due to the lack of permanent contacts between the Emperor and the Shah\, it was the Habsburg intelligence in Istanbul that regularly provided Vienna/Prague with the latest information regarding the developments in the Ottoman-Safavid relations. The project brings to light the crucial practices of collecting and delivering information and its vital importance for the decision-making process at the Imperial court. It should further answer the question of how essential were both the official and the secret diplomatic moves. Since the examined connections remain poorly researched\, the expected results aim to contribute to the general study of Europe’s image of the East and more concretely to the study of the relationship of the Habsburgs with the Middle East. \nAneliya Stoyanova\, Ph.D. obtained her Bachelor (2011)\, Master (2013) and Ph.D. (2020) in History from Sofia University. Her scientific interests lay in the Early Modern history\, more specifically in intercultural diplomacy\, diplomatic intermediation and ceremony\, and social networking. Different aspects of the everyday life of European diplomats in the Ottomanempire\, and the history of diseases in the Early modern period are also subjects of her research. Her Ph.D. thesis (Vienna\, Madrid and the Habsburg–Ottoman relations\, 1555–1606) focuses on the solidarity between the two branches of the Habsburg dynasty in their relations with the Ottomans in the second half of the 16 th century. Aneliya Stoyanova was awarded a Richard Plaschka Scholarship (2015–2016) and a Ph.D. Scholarship of the Gerda Henkel Foundation (2018–2019) and has conducted several months of archival research in Austria and Spain.

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: Now you can! Upward mobility in new towns across Europe after World War Two.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Albena Shkodrova (MON Diaspora Fellow\, Oct – Dec ‘20) will present her research at CAS under the topic: \nNow you can! Upward mobility in new towns across Europe after World War Two\n10 December\, 2020 at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Lyubomir Pozharliev \n– \nThe research project is a comparative study of social mobility in the new towns\, built in the 1950s and early 1960s in Bulgaria\, former Czechoslovakia\, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. It is a cross-European investigation into how these radical urban development projects\, which aimed to improve social advance opportunities\, were translated into reality. The research examines the similarities and divergences between East and West on the evolution of gender roles\, the tensions between generations\, old and new elites\, rural and urban groups. \nAfter The Second World War new towns emerged across Europe on clear grounds. From the United Kingdom to the countries of the Communist Bloc\, states engaged in sweeping projects of new town construction. Driven by pressing problems of urbanisation or urge to exploit natural resources\, in almost all cases they were also aiming at boosting social mobility. The social history of these urban projects across have attracted attention – more significant regarding the Eastern Bloc and growing in the West. However the history of social mobility in new towns has never been seriously compared across national borders. The absence of comparative perspectives is somewhat paradoxical\, since some parallels stand out clearly from the research in the East and the West. The investigations of these parallels are the research objectives of this project\, aiming to discuss comparatively the nature\, the effect and the renegotiation of the paradigms for equality\, which motivated the new towns’ construction. It enquires if\, how and for whom did the new towns provide social mobility in Europe across four division lines\, visible from the extant literature: gender social mobility; social mobility between old and new elites\, urban-rural social mobility\, s ocial mobility and generations. \nAlbena Shkodrova\, PhD\, is a historian and a writer. After a career in political journalism\, she worked as a travel writer and was for eight years the editor in chief of Bulgaria’s food and wine magazine Bacchus. She is the author of the popular book Communist Gourmet (2014)\, a bestseller in Bulgaria\, and of popular and academic articles on social history of food and everyday life\, some of which published in Gastronomica\, Food\, Culture and Society\, Food and History\, and Appetite. She has been a member of the research groups Social and Cultural History of Food (FOST) and Modernity and Society 1800–2000 (MoSa) in Belgium and is currently a researcher at the Centre for Social Movements in Bochum\, Germany. Her book Rebellious Cooks and Recipe Writing in Communist Bulgaria is expected release in early 2021 by Bloomsbury.

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: Hidden Madness: Mental Health Governance in Socialist Bulgaria
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Vladimir Nakov (MON Fellow\, Oct ‘20 – Jun ‘21) will present his research project at CAS on the topic: \nHidden Madness: Mental Health Governance in Socialist Bulgaria\n26 November\, 2020 at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Alessandro Nannini. \n– \nBulgarian psychiatric history is\, to a significant extent\, an empty spot. What exists locally pertains to sanitized history written by psychiatrists themselves. The predominant impression is that they cannot or do not want to say what has happened\, what has been the private\, political\, material\, scientific\, life of the psychiatric field. Thus\, the key challenge is to explicate the hidden reality and dynamics of the field. \nThe project is focused on mapping and critically discussing the broad question of how the general ideological context molded and structured the local psychiatric field. Another way to pose the question is to ask what in fact has been the “socialist” in the psychiatry from that period. The intent is to identify the absences\, the hidden\, and the distortions resulting from its “socialist” nature and also on a micro level to follow those practices\, which may not be adversely affected by the ideology\, or even used as a mask to develop under and behind it (for example\, the presence of psychodynamic theories and practices behind the cover-up of their formal rejection and criticism which could be seen in child psychiatry for example). \nThis is an important issue\, not only from a historiographical perspective\, but also because it could help us better discern socialist legacies in the current psychiatric practice and remedy them where needed. The first objective would be to reconstruct the boundary maintaining mechanisms of the socialist psychiatry in Bulgaria. The second objective would be to trace the intersections of several different lines of development– juridical framework\, type and dynamics of the services\, the “material” milieu. The third objective is to throw some light on issues which were among the forbidden topics during the period – suicide and psychiatric abuse. Not many documents about psychiatry have been preserved\, key archives have been destroyed\, and there was ideological pushing forward of people without real contribution and the contribution of others was ignored\, especially from the period before 1944. \nThe study will use as many sources as possible and combine various qualitative methods\, including archival material\, and key professional journals during the period\, medical press. Another source of data would be interviews conducted with representatives of the generation\, whose professional lives are situated predominantly in the socialist period.

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: Competing Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lyubomir Pozharliev will present his research proposal on the topic: \nCompeting Interests. State and Private actors in the Development of Black Sea Infrastructure in Russia and Bulgaria (1856–1914)\non 19 November\, 2020 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Agoston Berecz \n– \nThe aim of the project is to research the competition and cooperation of state and commercial interests of key Russian and Bulgarian Governmental and entrepreneurial actors as a driver for long-term development of maritime infrastructure in the Black Sea region – the ports of Varna and Odessa. The objects of the research are The Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company (founded in 1856) and the Bulgarian Commercial Steam Navigation Company (founded 1893). The studied period is between 1856 and the beginning of the WWI. The hypothesis of the study is that the construction of maritime infrastructure is a hybrid project\, the result of simultaneous confrontation and negotiation of presented as a common good strategies of Governmental and Imperial actors and the commercial interests of entrepreneurs and merchants. The transfer of knowledge is also important. This approach to the development of infrastructure explicates the complex character of the modernization processes\, in which the two modernization lines – through “top down” state intervention and by “down up” entrepreneurship and trade activities are entangled\, in constant tension and negotiation. The project follows the methodological frame of entangled modernities. The proposed method is interpretative analysis of official and personal documents\, related to the two companies. \nA comparative study of the development of maritime infrastructures in Odessa and Varna\, seen through the prism of the domination/negotiation of state and private interests has not been conducted to date. In addition to answering the question about the relationship between state and private interests in the construction and development of the maritime infrastructure in the two cases\, the study has the ambition to shed light on the modernization processes for which infrastructure construction is a main factor. \nThe study of the negotiation\, conflicts\, and striving for dominance of commercial vs. state interests will explicate the complex entanglement of two different lines of modernization – by top-down state intervention\, whose main priority is the establishment and protection of state sovereignty\, and modernization through trade development. It is accepted that the modernization development of Russia and Bulgaria followed the first model – modernization through the “strong arm” of centralized state power (Lieven 2015; Taki 2016; Dimitrov et al 1996). This presumption is obviously valid for Soviet Russia\, and is perceived as valid for the Russian Empire as well. The analysis of the cases of the two shipping joint-stock companies\, combining the interests both of entrepreneurs and merchants\, and the state\, could prove that modernization developments were much more complex\, with constant negotiation and confrontation\, or with periods of domination of one or the other type of interests. The current project could challenge the notion of a dominant model of modernization\, defending the more complex and resilient notion of “entangled modernities” (Randeria 2002) and “entangled histories” (Daskalov\, Mishkova 2013\, 2014\, 2015\, 2017) in the construction and development of infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: Narrating AI. Speculating through Science and Fiction on the Future of Machine and Human Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alexander Popov will present his research proposal on the topic: \nNarrating AI. Speculating through Science and Fiction on the Future of Machine and Human Intelligence\non 22 October\, 2020 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \n \nArtificial intelligence (AI) systems have achieved tremendous successes\, such as driving automobiles in urban environments\, and beating the best human players at the world’s most difficult games. In parallel with the “AI revolution\,” researchers are becoming concerned with the problem of control: how to guarantee that if an artificial general intelligence is created\, its values would be aligned with human values. This project will focus on some of the proposed solutions to the AI alignment problem (Russell 2019). It will seek to operationalize the language of this paradigm for the purposes of the humanities and the social sciences. AI has already been productively engaged by a variety of disciplines along this spectrum\, among which: sociology and ethics (Wallach and Allen 2008)\, science and technology studies (Wilson 2011)\, phenomenology (Dreyfus 2007)\, literary theory (Ryan 1991)\, science fiction studies (Canavan 2015). The project will provide a bridge between these fields of study via the figure of AI as a narrative agent (and narrator) in contemporary speculative fiction (SF). Through its highly synthetic nature it will attempt to assemble new instruments for theorizing and historicizing SF\, and seek interdisciplinary convergence between broader fields of research. The presentation will outline these theoretical tools and the common framework that will be developed during the project\, so that they can be used in the experimental readings of SF texts. These tools will be drawn primarily from four broad fields: AI research\, phenomenology\, science and technology studies\, and literary theory. \nStuart Russell\, one of the most influential figures in AI\, has proposed inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) as a general strategy for AI alignment. IRL presents a computational agent with behavioral data from humans and forces it to infer on its own a reward schema for the task at hand\, based on the observable expert policy and reactions (e.g. satisfaction\, anger\, etc.). Researchers have used IRL to teach robots to emulate the walk of insects\, and self-flying helicopters to perform tricks previously achievable only by human pilots. Their hope is to use a version of this approach to make sure AIs can learn human values in complex social domains and in this way to ensure AI safety. However\, Russell’s research plan will inevitably be faced with many inherent difficulties\, such as human irrationality and biases\, long-term planning and temporal thinking\, preference inconsistency and instability\, and most importantly – the task of aggregating the preferences of multiple and/or collective agents in a way that resolves incompatibilities and cancels out malicious intent. \nFortunately\, AIs will have at their disposal a rich archive of human artifacts to learn from. They will therefore need to learn how to consume them: how to read literature\, interpret emotions\, etc. To accomplish this\, as the hypothesis of the project goes\, AI research needs to become more sensitive to the nexus of systems and apparatuses that govern human life – stretching from the material to the semiotic\, and even rethought as material-semiotic (Haraway 1990; Barad 2001). Such an approach can benefit from Hubert Dreyfus’ critique of symbolic AI and his contention that experiences of objects are not stored in the brain; they are the world itself. The affordances of the environment are “solicitations to act\,” and being-in-the-world is an openness to new ways of gripping the world and exploring the affordances of the environment. The figure of AI in SF is a convenient locus that amalgamates in narrative form all of these preoccupations: learning from the environment\, grappling with emergent consciousness\, and having to effectively combine conflicting human preferences. AI narrators are of particular interest\, since telling a coherent story is in some ways very much akin to understanding how a society functions\, how it resolves conflicts and how various agents comprising it coordinate among themselves to solve problems. The presentation will thus outline potential convergences between narratological theories about the structure of fictional stories and worlds\, and ideas from utopian studies\, which are preoccupied with the ways in which subjective values and goals are assembled at large spatio-temporal scales. Finally\, the project will think toward a theory of “ontological realism” – following Fredric Jameson (2005) and focusing on the works of Kim Stanley Robison. It will explore SF as a laboratory for constructing and evaluating ontological models and will argue that perhaps we can enrich our reading of such counterfactual scenarios\, if we adopt the point of view of AI readers learning to distill human preferences and to combine them – if not in utopia\, then at least in anti-anti-utopia. \n– \nAlexander Popov is a computational linguist who also works in the broad field of science fiction studies. He obtained his PhD in Informatics from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences\, with a dissertation on the topic of lexical modeling in the context of artificial intelligence and natural language processing. He has worked on projects in the fields of machine translation\, automatic information extraction\, knowledge representation\, and digital reading. He studies literary texts mainly from the theoretical and methodological lenses of utopian studies\, ecocriticism and posthumanism\, and is also particularly interested in the language of science fiction – from a cognitive and literary-theoretic point of view. He is a long-time editor and author at “ShadowDance” – the oldest media outlet in Bulgaria dedicated to the speculative arts. He teaches science fiction at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.”

SUMMARY:Fellows seminar: Aesthetics as “medicina mentis”? A Reconsideration of the Origins of Aesthetics as a Philosophical Science
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alessandro Nannini will present his research proposal on the topic: \nAesthetics as “medicina mentis”? A Reconsideration of the Origins of Aesthetics as a Philosophical Science\non 15 October\, 2020 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nAbstract: \nAs has been widely known since the classical studies of Hadot\, Foucault\, and Nussbaum\, the understanding of philosophy as a medicine of the mind dates back to ancient philosophy. One of the most debated challenges in recent intellectual history has been to investigate the strategies through which this perspective has contributed to shaping the rise of the early modern thought (Caygill 2010; Giglioni 2016). While the conception of medicina mentis in this period was long seen just as a moral or theological metaphor (Harrison 2007)\, the latest scholarship has pointed out that the cure of the self and the purge of the mind from prejudices constitutes a specific feature of modernity\, ranging from rhetoric to morals\, from natural science to homiletics. This model is famously indebted to the Baconian tradition\, where the mind is regarded as distempered and haunted by idols\, thus requiring a regimen grounded on specific exercises in order to realign with external reality and regain serenity. As Giglioni\, Corneanu and Jalobeanu (Corneanu 2011; Jalobeanu 2015; Giglioni 2016) have claimed\, key in this process is the sharpening of the senses and the control over imagination\, so as to overcome self-delusion and devise methods for attaining practical wisdom. \nPrecisely the necessity to study and perfect sensibility according to its own laws leads the eighteenth-century German philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) to found a specific discipline\, aesthetics\, understood as the “science of the sensuous cognition” (Aesthetica\, 1750\, § 1). However\, although one of the chief goals of aesthetics consists in the emendation of the senses and imagination\, as in the philosophical tradition of medicina mentis\, the role of aesthetics within this theoretical framework has hitherto been completely ignored. \nThe goal of my project is precisely to investigate for the first time the birth of scientific aesthetics in the light of the tradition of medicina mentis. My attempt is first of all to reconstruct the debate on the medicine of the mind in Germany in the era of the founding of aesthetics; on this basis\, I intend to analyze the strategies whereby nascent aesthetics resumes and renovates such a tradition; lastly\, I aim to examine how this appropriation makes a decisive contribution to the birth of modern psychotherapy in the mid-eighteenth century. In this sense\, so runs my working hypothesis\, not only does Baumgarten’s aesthetics play a pivotal role in the framework of medicina mentis\, but it is also crucial in the reconfiguration of medicina mentis as a full-fledged psychological therapy. \nIn this seminar\, I will focus on the broad outline of the project\, dealing in particular with the general question of why and how aesthetics could have emerged as a medicine for the mind and what role it was supposed to play in the preservation of health. I will leave aside for the moment the medical reception of aesthetics and its role in nascent psychotherapy. \nAlessandro Nannini studied at the University of Bologna\, earning a master degree in Philosophical Sciences and another one in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology. He received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Palermo. He was a research fellow at the University of Halle-Wittenberg\, Parma\, Jena\, Erfurt\, Bucharest\, at the Klassik Stiftung in Weimar\, and at the new Europe College in Bucharest. Currently\, he is a member of the research group “Philosophie allemande au 18e siècle” at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon. His research concerns the intellectual history and aesthetics of the Early Modern Age\, especially the German Enlightenment\, with particular regard to the intersections of philosophy\, history of science\, and Lutheran theology.
