\nМодератор: Любомира Попова \nAbstract: \nWhile there seems to be a consensus among a wide and dispersed set of politicians\, journalists\, and even social media users that there is no police violence in Bulgaria\, another set of actors—including activists\, some journalists\, and a psychologist from the Ministry of Interior—claims that police violence in the country is becoming a systemic problem. \nIn this presentation\, I will lay out some preliminary results\, challenges\, and notes from an ongoing research project seeking to understand the meanings which a variety of stakeholders ascribe to „police violence“ and the strategies through which these stakeholders make or unmake the category of „police violence“ itself. In particular\, this presentation focuses on some methodological and research design challenges from the ongoing study\, based on work with news sources and reports from the regional prosecutor offices.

DESCRIPTION:Miglena Stamberova (BG-Swiss Fellowships for Bulgarian Junior Scholars\, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) is presenting her topic on: \nPoliticizing Science: the Impact of Politics on the Bulgarian Archaeology during the Communist Period and the Years of Transition\non 12 December 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Sebastian Fink \nAbstract: This research explores the dynamics of Bulgarian archaeology during the communist period (1944-1989) and the Transition years (1989-2007)\, examining the profound influence of political ideologies on archaeological research\, scientific interpretations and social implications. It is innovative for Bulgarian historiography\, as the subject is challenging due to objectively assessing such a recent past. The proposed research is a multifaceted endeavour that requires a comprehensive approach. It aims to examine a wide range of issues\, problems and key features\, including the historical background of Bulgaria during the communist period and beyond\, political ideologies\, state institutions and propaganda\, international relations and the influence of political policies on the conservation and management of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage. The study aims to stimulate scholarly discourse and inspire further research into Bulgaria’s complex scientific past using various research methods\, including archival documents\, biographies of emblematic archaeological sites\, and comparative analysis with other Eastern European countries.

DESCRIPTION:Igor Serdiuk (Sustaining Ukrainian Scholarship\, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) presents his research: \nHetmanate and Left Bank Ukraine in the 18th and 19th centuries: medicalization\, quality of life and demographic behavior of the population\non 05 December 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by Oana Cojocaru \nAbstract: This presentation will focus on the Hetmanate\, an autonomous state entity within the Russian Empire in the eighteenth century. By the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, its territory was reduced to the Poltava and Chernihiv provinces. Today\, these areas correspond to the Poltava\, Chernihiv\, and parts of the Sumy\, Cherkasy\, Kyiv\, and Dnipro regions of Ukraine\, as well as the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation. \nThe Hetmanate’s historical development is often analyzed through the lens of the “colonized” and “colonizer” relationship\, drawing parallels to Scotland’s position within Britain. A recurring argument posits that annexed regions were culturally\, economically\, and socially less developed than the imperial center\, which purportedly sought to modernize them. This narrative has been particularly persistently applied to the Hetmanate\, with imperial modernization frequently framed as a justification for the suppression of tradition\, autonomy\, local language\, and culture. Within this framework\, the region’s history is often portrayed teleologically as a trajectory of linear progress. \nIt is necessary to critically evaluate the validity of the claim regarding the “backwardness” of colonized territories. This prompts key methodological questions: what focus and analytical frameworks should be adopted to investigate the functioning of a distinctive region within an imperial system? What sources are suitable for such research\, and how can they be interpreted? One promising approach involves studying quality of life using measurable and comparable markers. However\, identifying and applying such markers remains a critical challenge.

DESCRIPTION:Sebastian Fink (Relevance of the Humanities Fellow\, Oct ‘24 – Feb ‘25) is presenting his topic on: \nCritique and Enlightenment in Ancient Mesopotamia\non 28 November 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Miglena Stamberova \nAbstract: The so-called Pre-Socratics mark the beginning of philosophy. In many books the rise of philosophy is described as a break with previous lines of thought\, it is described as an intellectual revolution\, as a move from “myth to logos”\, as a move from pre-logical to logical thinking\, or as the rise of critical thinking and the first Enlightenment period in world history. Xenophanes (ca. 560-478) was often designated as the world’s first critic of religion. So\, critique is intrinsically linked to the beginning of philosophy. These lines of thinking were also taken up in Karl Jasper’s influential theory of the Axial Age. In the Axial Age the intellectual ways of mankind decisively changed and philosophy and a new kind of more philosophical religions arose. \nThe question that struck me was: How did people think before the Axial Age? In the cuneiform texts we find no signs of pre-logical thinking\, but rational approaches to problem solving and numerous instances of critique. In my talk I want to address texts that criticize rulers\, religion\, and the traditional wisdom. Finally\, I want to address the question how enlightenment phenomena and critique influence societies.

DESCRIPTION:Lubomira Popova (BG-Swiss Fellowships for Bulgarian Junior Scholars\, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) is presenting on: \nIs the “new” EU enlargement methodology already obsolete? An empirical reconstruction of the EU’s New enlargement methodology\non 21 November 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Oleg Rusakovskiy \nAbstract: The need for a reform of the EU’s enlargement policy under the pressure of the geopolitical circumstances has been clearly recognised by both researchers and experts. This effort requires a shift in the cognitive perspective\, as most of the studies in the field have been constrained by the framework of the dominant rationalist approach\, which was a) designed before the Eastern enlargement began\, and b) aimed at universal theoretical understanding. The system of cultural\, historical\, political and economic specificities of the individual postcommunist societies have been omitted. \nThe project aims to change the mental map through which EU enlargement is being perceived by highlighting the fundamental logic of the enlargement methodology through its practical manifestation in the EU’s enlargement packages. We will apply a complex qualitative-quantitative analytical methodology to go beyond the official statements in the European Commission’s official communications on enlargement and country reports and reach a systematic structure of key policy characteristics. This knowledge will allow for some fundamental changes in the EU approach towards future enlargements\, aiming at qualitatively different results  in much more successful Europeanisation of the applicant countries.

DESCRIPTION:Oleg Rusakovskiy (Gerda Henkel Fellow\, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) will present his research on: \nHistory Mercenaries in the Tsar’s Service: Muscovy and European Military Entrepreneurship\, 1630 – 1634\non 07 November 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Stefan Peychev \nAbstract: The project aims to investigate the interaction between the state of Muscovy and the foreign military enterprisers in the 17thcentury\, particularly\, on behalf of a case study on the four mercenary regiments\, serving in the Russian army during the Smolensk War from 1632 to 1634. This was the largest and the best-documented employment of large mercenary units\, consisting completely of foreigners\, in Early Modern Russian history. The presentation explores the significance of the case in the context of the army reforms and state-building in 17th-century Russia questioning the state-centered narrative still dominant in studies on Russian military history. The mercenaries’ employment of the 1630s demonstrates that the central government of Muscovy was willing to cooperate with foreign military commanders granting them sufficient administrative\, legal\, and financial independence\, but also with bankers\, arms traders\, and merchants abroad actively playing on the market of European military service. During the presentation\, I will discuss the theoretical and methodological framework of this study and also present my work on the database of European mercenary officers\, who served the Russian tsar during the Smolensk War\, as the main analytical tool to reconstruct their collective biographies.

DESCRIPTION:Stefan Peychev (BG-Swiss Fellowships for Bulgarian Junior Scholars\, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) will present the topic: \nFire and Water: The Hydrothermal Landscapes of the Balkans in the Age of Geological Travel\, ca. 1500-1900\non 31 October 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Martin Ivanov \nAbstract: \nThis interdisciplinary project studies the geological exploration of the Balkan Peninsula\, focusing on the descriptions and analyses of thermal water that were produced by traveling naturalists and scientists from the beginning of the sixteenth century until the end of the nineteenth. Placing the texts in their proper historical contexts and considering the authors’ agendas and the broader developments within the travel writing genre\, the project examines how the exploration of the geology and thermal hydrology of the Balkans was situated in the overall study of the peninsula and what role it played in shaping the travelers’ perceptions of Balkan societies and cultures. I look into how Southeast Europe’s affinity for the healing and sacral properties of spring water informed Western travelers’ perceptions of the region as ‘other’ vis-à-vis the places they were coming from and how the study of the hydrothermal landscapes of the Balkans influenced the formation of a comprehensive image of the region. I use insights from cultural geography and anthropology to show how thermal water played an essential role in place-making in the Balkans and how its scientific exploration was ultimately linked to the study of human culture.

DESCRIPTION:Gil Ribak (Relevance of the Humanities\, Oct – Dec ’24) will present the topic: \n„Mothers Sell Their Little Children”: Imagining Blackness in Eastern European Yiddish Culture\non 17 October 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Pavlo Yeremieiev \nAbstract: \nHow does one group of people imagine another group which it has never met and what can we learn from it about the ways knowledge about race\, hierarchy\, and difference is created and transmitted? What imageries were generated in that modernizing process and how is it linked to Europeanization? \nMy study examines Yiddish-speaking Jews in Eastern Europe (Tsarist Russia\, Habsburg-ruled Galicia\, and Romania)\, a population bedeviled by grinding poverty and economic and residential restrictions\, and their view of another maligned population – Black Africans and African Americans – with whom they had no contact. Although most of them would not see a Black person throughout their lives\, or if they immigrated only upon their arrival in America\, East European Jews already acquired some level of information – however skewed – that served as a basis for imagining Black people. The study is organized according to various venues of Yiddish culture (literature\, press\, and theater): focusing mostly on the 19th and early 20th centuries (through the 1930s)\, my research looks at a wide range of materials\, such as rabbinic exegesis\, pious advice\, travel narratives (either original or adapted from other languages)\, folklore\, scientific explorations\, pulp literature\, press reports\, political rhetoric\, educational materials\, theater shows\, and films. Whereas those sources were far from monolithic\, they ascribed to Black people characteristics of savagery\, primitiveness\, less-than-human nature\, cowardice\, heightened or depraved sexuality\, and being devoid of familial feelings. \nIn addition to revisiting and upending much of the scholarship about Black-Jewish relations\, and especially its assertions about the religious component or historical experience that ostensibly led to Jewish identification with African Americans\, my findings are significant to the larger context of immigration history. They demonstrate how would-be immigrants have had preconceived imagery of Black people prior to setting foot in America (same notions are true for those who stayed in the Old Country). It is noteworthy that similar patterns can be found among other populations. Parallel cases of imagining people without meeting them can be shown with other ethnic groups who also lived in areas that had no Black population\, whether in Europe or Asia. Those themes are especially relevant to studying the dynamics of racism\, as they expand our understanding of the genealogy of knowledge. In that respect\, this study is also important to fields such as translation studies and history of science\, as it examines how literature\, scientific texts\, and travel accounts trickled down and transformed when disseminated in a different culture.

DESCRIPTION:Pavlo Yeremieiev (Sustaining Ukrainian Scholarship\, Oct ’24 – Jul ’25) will present the topic: \nThe Images of Ukraine in Russian Church Historiography of the Long 19th Century\non 10 October 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30. \nModerated by: Gil Ribak \nAbstract: At the turn of the 18th–19th centuries\, church historiography was established as a separate discipline of historical knowledge in the Russian Empire. The church historians of the ‘long’ 19th century constructed the grand narratives of Russian ecclesiastical history\, symbolically labelled the events and processes of the past as parts of the history of the Russian church. The problem of characterising Ukrainian lands as “own” or “alien” was relevant to them. \nThe transformation of Russian church narratives about Ukrainian history will be examined from a broad perspective\, including the history of colonialism\, nationalism studies\, and new imperial history. The characteristics of the Ukrainian lands in church historiography were influenced by the historians’ personal theological\, historiosophical\, and socio-political views\, changes in methodological approaches to studying history\, and general cultural trends of the era (Enlightenment\, Romanticism\, etc.). The church historians often combined the local loyalties with the all-imperial\, Russian-centered\, pan-Slavic and Orthodox consciousness. \nThe meanings of the terms “Ukraine” and “Little Russia” varied in the church historiography according to the general principles of the “language games” described by Jean-Francois Lyotard. The changes in the scenarios of power (in terms of Richard Wartman) and the invention of traditions (in terms of Eric Hobsbaum) played a crucial role in constructing images of Ukrainian lands by Russian church historians. In their description of the Ukrainian lands\, the church historians often polemicised with the Ukrainian and Polish national movements. The images of Jews in Ukrainian lands were also crucial for the Russian church historians. The representatives of church historiography actualised Biblical images and medieval concepts (the Second Jerusalem\, etc.) to characterise Ukrainian religious history. Banalisation and reinterpretation of metaphors took place in church descriptions of Ukrainian history.

SUMMARY:Конференция "Between the Local and the Global: Unpacking Environmental History of Ukraine"
DESCRIPTION:The EnvHistUA Research Group is pleased to inform that the conference “Between the Local and the Global: Unpacking Environmental History of Ukraine” will be held on 25-26 September 2024 at the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS)\, Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nThe significant impact of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war on the environment of Ukraine has consequences far beyond the borders of the country which have gained visibility locally and globally. Scholars and practitioners across diverse disciplines have undertaken various projects intended to document environmental destruction and have organized a number of events. The media reports about the devastating impacts of everyday hostilities on flora and fauna\, soil and water. NGO and state institutions collect data to recognize Russia’s actions towards nature as an act of ecocide. This unprecedented interest has brought the topic of Ukraine’s environment and ecological crises to the forefront of global media and scholarship. The Kakhovka dam disruption by the Russian military has uncovered deeper historical contexts of ecological issues. Unravelling current and similar historical relationships stand as the primary objective of environmental historians seeking to elucidate the complexity of the engagement of human with the surrounding environment. \n\nEnvHistUA Research Group is organizing this scholarly conference in order to advance and consolidate the environmental history of Ukraine as a research field and address related challenges. The event aims to bring together scholars to discuss epistemological aspects and practical implications of researching and writing environmental histories of Ukraine that go beyond the realm of disasters and catastrophes. An imperative aspect of this endeavour involves writing\, rethinking and diversifying the existing historical narratives about Ukraine’s environment. Our starting point is to expose\, conceptualize and analyze the multifacetedness of nature–culture\, human/society – environment interactions and developments through time and across Ukrainian lands. Secondly\, we place great emphasis on transnational\, trans-imperial\, transborder\, and global nexuses Ukraine’s environments were a part of. This epistemological approach holds the potential to unveil hitherto untold narratives\, thereby enriching the fabric of history. Finally\, the event engages with the question of what environmental history can offer to Ukrainian and European studies\, as well as global studies\, and vice versa. This knowledge is invaluable in addressing present and future environmental challenges sustainably and responsibly. \nIf you have any questions\, please write to envhistua.official@gmail.com. \nIf you wish to join the conference online\, please use the following Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWed\, 25 Sep 2024\n\n\n\n\n09:00 AM – 09:45 AM EEST \nRegistration\n\n09:45 AM – 10:45 AM EEST \nOpening Disscussion\nWelcome messages:\nJulia Malitska\, Södertörn University\, Sweden\nOleksii Chebotarov\, University of Vienna\, Austria\nAnna Olenenko\, University of Alberta\, Canada; Khortytsia National Academy\, Ukraine \n\n10:45 AM – 11:15 AM EEST \nCoffee Break\n\n11:15 AM – 12:30 PM EEST \nSession 1: Narrating Landscapes\nChair: Oleksii Chebotariov  \nPresenters:\nIgor Serdiuk\, How to Write an Environmental History of the Hetman Region? These two forms of domination are intertwined but they manifest differently in environmental histories of any given region. Far too often more-than-human histories set in Eastern Europe fall between the cracks of the global East/West or South/North divides that structure knowledge production. This lecture will address the epistemological tensions between the colonial and the imperial using the example of captive animal management in Poland at the turn of the twentieth century. Asian elephants and European bison will serve as companions to the reflection on writing global animal history from a local perspective of Eastern Europe. As representatives of charismatic megafauna\, these animals inspired colonial longings\, anti-imperial resistance\, and national sentiments. Historically contingent ideas about exotic and Indigenous species are bound up with global dimensions of wildlife trade\, species conservation\, and cultural politics practiced at the edges of empires. Recognizing the limits and ambivalences of the colonial/imperial archives can aid environmental historians in situating localized interspecies relations within the global arena without losing the grasp of the specificity of the semi-peripheral context. \nSpeaker: Marianna Szczygielska \nModerator: Julia Malitska \n\n03:30 PM – 04:00 PM EEST \nCoffee Break\n\n04:00 PM – 05:30 PM EEST \nSession 2: Cultivating Nature\nChair: Julia Malitska \nPresenters:\nVladyslav Hrybovskyi\, Seasonal Rhythms of the Location of the Zaporozhian Cossacks\, Noghais and Crimean Shepherds in the Great Meadow\nAnthony Amato\, The Great Hutsul Plow-Up: Nature\, Culture\, or What? \nDiscussant: Laura Kuen \n\n07:00 PM EEST \nWelcome Dinner\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThu\, 26 Sep 2024\n\n\n\n\n09:00 AM – 10:15 AM EEST \nSession 3: Contested Waterscapes\nChair: Anna Olenenko \nPresenters:\nDzhulietta Avanesian\, Changing the Dnipro: Discussions on the River Modernization in Imperial Periodicals\nIllia Malyk\, Understanding River History: Modern Ukrainian Historiography \nDiscussant: Volodymyr Kulikov \n\n10:15 AM – 10:45 PM EEST \nCoffee Break\n\n10:45 AM – 12:30 PM EEST \nSession 4: Extractivism and Environment\nChair: Julia Malitska \nPresenters:\nKristina Hook\, Ecological and Educational Gaps in Ukrainian Human-Environmental Relations: Enduring Impacts of Moscow’s Extractive Policies and the 1930s Ukrainian Holodomor\nVolodymyr Kulikov\, In the Service of Resources: Extractive Company Towns in Eastern Ukraine Across Twentieth-Century Political Regimes\nKseniia Lopukh\, Ecological Economics and the Contribution of Ukrainian Intellectuals S.Podolynskyi\, S.Ostapenko\, and V.Vernadkyi \nDiscussant: Iryna Zamuruieva \n\n12:30 PM – 02:00 PM EEST \nLunch\n\n02:00 PM – 03:15 PM EEST \nSession 5: Struggle for/against Nature\nChair: Oleksii Chebotariov  \nPresenters:\nAnastasiia Khovtura\, The Struggle for Cleanliness: Waste Management in Kharkiv at the Turn of the 19th and 20th centuries\nTetiana Perga\, An Unequal Struggle: Gophers in Ukraine amid Soviet Modernization and Totalitarian Regime \nDiscussant: Marianna Szczygielska \n\n03:15 PM – 03:45 PM EEST \nCoffee Break\n\n03:45 PM – 05:00 PM EEST \nSession 6: Environment and War\nChair: Anna Olenenko \nPresenters:\nIryna Zamuruieva\, A Field from afar\nKarolina Koziura\, Agriculture\, and Farmers’ Anxieties along the East European Frontier \nDiscutant: TBA \n\n05:00 PM – 05:30 PM EEST \nClosing Remarks

Han Kitab
DESCRIPTION:Wai-Yip Ho (Relevance of the Humanities\, May ‘24 – Jul ‘24) will present the topic: \nTranslating Islam\, Critiquing Christianity: Sino-Islam in Response to Christianity in the Han Kitab\non 04 July 2024 (Thursday)\, at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Petar Parvanov. \nAbstract: During the Ming and Qing Dynasties of Imperial China\, Muslim Chinese scholars translated and transmitted Islamic thought from Persian-Arabian texts to Chinese readership through the intellectual framework and vocabularies of Confucian Chinese tradition. This intellectual thought in Islamic literature was called Han Kitab (Sino-Islamic texts) and those thinkers are known as “Muslim Confucianists” (Huiru). With the new outlook of the harmonious synthesis on Islamic and Confucian thought\,  this research project proposes how the leading Confucian Muslim scholars responded\, interpreted\, and criticized Christian doctrines in the writings of Han Kitab. By selectively translating and analysing Sino-Islamic texts in dialogue with Christianity\, this research project attempts to retrieve Muslim Chinese scholars’ responses towards Christian missionaries and the Christian doctrines. The implication of this research on Islamic Confucianism-Christian relations shows how two monotheistic faiths interact or rival from each other in the Confucian culture

DESCRIPTION:SOCIAL RELEVANCE OF THE HUMANITIES (REV-HUM) \nFELLOWS ROUND TABLE \nhosted by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia\n7 June\, 2024 \nThe Social Relevance of the Humanities (RevHum) fellowship program\, proposed jointly by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia and the New Europe College Bucharest and developed with the financial support of the Porticus Foundation under its global initiative ‘Talents for Good’\, aims to underscore the cognitive functions of the humanities and their potential as critical disciplines by opening them up to issues relevant in/for the contemporary world – issues that are “practical”\, but also epistemological\, ethical\, philosophical\, etc. \nThe program is guided by the belief that there is a considerable added value for humanities scholars across the academe\, whatever their field\, to be encouraged to rethink their topics in terms of their broader contemporary relevance (be it political\, ethical\, religious or academic)\, yet necessarily of significance for the world we are living in. \nCAS Sofia and NEC Bucharest cordially invites you to join the annual table discussion under the REV-HUM Fellowship programme to be convened in Sofia\, Bulgaria on: 07 June (Friday)\, 2024. \nHow Critical Thinking and Academic Standards navigate in the World of Post-Truth?\nIn times when documented facts and observable realities are viewed as irrelevant\, or less important than personal beliefs and opinions\, and emotional appeals are predominantly used to influence public opinion and direct decision making\, we should also discuss how science and critical thinking in general fit into and/or contradicts to this re-enchanted world of Post-Truth. Usually scientific knowledge and methods (also contemporary art) are summoned to expose post-truth but we also need to consider the specific ways in which post-modern humanities contributed to the proliferation of “inner” truths and to the emancipation of intellectual idiosyncrasies. \nBy gathering a group of current CAS and NEC Fellows we would like to provoke an open and informal debate on the following (but not limited to) questions: \n\nAre we living in a post-truth times? What role does the academy have in giving way to this moment of “alternative facts\,” and “truth isn’t truth”?\nIs the Enlightenment project of modern (objective ??) science completed\, compromised or reverted?\nCan science and critical knowledge be deployed to other social fields (politics\, media\, education\, social reproduction\, etc.) without being compromised?\nShould scientists preserve a degree of independence and detachment from the “outer world”?\nWhy the whims of intellectual creativity and fantasy are merited in post-modern science and contemporary art\, while they are to be sanctioned in media and politics?\nWho is the best producer of Post-Truths – the AI or the Humans?\nIf we are deprived of truth\, do we still have values?\nHow do you navigate all these big questions in your own focused research?\n…

The aim of the project is to explore whether and to what extent the Bulgarian Orthodox Church was part of the general trend\, characteristic for other European churches (regardless of denomination)\, for taking part and supporting the modernization projects in their respective countries. The question seems to be important\, on the one hand because it remains generally unexplored in the historical literature. It seems important also because nowadays the tradition of Church involvement in social work and modernization projects in Bulgaria is completely lost\, mainly as a result of the official prohibition imposed on these activities by the communist authorities. Last but not least\, because most of the contemporary Orthodox churches think of themselves as the custodians of an imagined conservative tradition and could hardly rethink their past in such a context.

DESCRIPTION:Kalle Puolakka (RevHum Fellow\, Mar ‘24 – Jul ‘24) will present his project on: \nLiterature\, Knowledge\, and Epistemic Trust\non 16 May\, 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nAbstract: Philosophers have been interested in the epistemic and cognitive value of literature ever since Plato and Aristotle. Does literature convey knowledge? What sort of knowledge does it afford? After reviewing the contemporary discussion on the topic in philosophical aesthetics\, as well as its ancient roots in the debate between Plato and Aristotle over the educational significance of poetry\, I single out one concept for closer examination\, experiential knowledge. Proponents of the idea of experiential knowledge\, which is sometimes also called “phenomenological knowledge” or “subjective knowledge”\, argue that literary works can give knowledge about what it is like to experience something\, that is\, how experiences feel like and how the world appears from a certain point of view. \nIn the second part of the presentation\, I outline three important aspects of my own account of how literary works can be vehicles of experiential knowledge. First\, showing the ways in which John Dewey’s philosophy of experience and especially his notion of undergoing illuminates the character of the literary experience behind the experiential knowledge literary works can afford. Second\, I respond to some ethical worries relating to experiential knowledge\, especially having to do with the question whether it is sometimes even preposterous morally to claim to know what others’ experiences feel like. Third\, I argue that especially literary works that exemplify epistemic virtues like intellectual honesty\, intellectual courage\, open-mindedness\, as well as intellectual carefulness and thoroughness should be regarded as strong epistemic media for giving readers a sense of what the experiences they deal with are like. The philosophical points of the paper are illustrated with a look at the experience of social death articulated in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved (1987). \nModerated by Nadezhda Alexandrova.

DESCRIPTION:Michiel Meeusen (RevHum Fellow\, Mar ‘24 – Jul ‘24) will give his presentation on: \nThe Bodily Turn and Stoic Philosophy\non 11 April\, 2024 (Thursday) at 16:30 h. \nModerated by Strahil Panayotov. \nAbstract: As a branch of ‘technical’ learning\, medicine was held in high regard by the educated elite in the High Imperial era (ca. 1st–2nd c. CE)\, a pivotal period in scientific and political history. Confronted with the sheer reality of illness\, medical uncertainty\, and the prominence of the medical art in the public sphere\, numerous eminent members of learned society\, including philosophers\, sophists\, politicians\, even emperors\, wrote extensively about medicine and health related topics\, to the extent that some scholar contemptuously speak of an ‘Age of Hypochondria’. The time is right for a revaluation of this cultural phenomenon based on a more sensitive and contextual reading of the available sources. In this talk we will explore\, in some depth\, the patient perspective in this era with an emphasis on Stoic approaches to health\, illness\, and the expectation of death.
