
Discussion Series “Economic and Social History”: Spoils of War: The Repatriation of Children in the post-1918 Balkans

We would like to invite you to the upcoming lecture, part of the seminar “Economic and Social History of Bulgaria: The Future through the Past Culture.” The discusssion series continues with a lecture by Prof. Theodora Dragostinova (Ohio State University) on the topic of “Spoils of War: The Repatriation of Children in the post-1918 Balkans.” The event will take place at the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, at 17:00.
Abstract: This presentation will focus on one thousand children from the Balkan borderlands to tell the stories of displaced children and divided families during the Great War and its aftermath. By analyzing how governments, humanitarian organizations, and families acted on behalf of these unaccompanied minors, the lecture will explain how children become “spoils of war” rhetorically, physically, and emotionally.
The discussion series is convened by Martin Ivanov and Roumen Avramov. They are hosted by the Cente for Advanced Study Sofia.
