Fellow seminar: Studying the Invisible Systemic Problem that is Police Violence in Bulgaria: Preliminary notes on an ongoing study

9 January @ 16:30 - 18:00

Konstantin Georgiev (BG-Swiss Fellowships for Bulgarian Junior Scholars, Oct ‘24 – Jul ‘25) is giving a talk on:

Studying the Invisible Systemic Problem that is Police Violence in Bulgaria: Preliminary notes on an ongoing study

on 09 January 2025 (Thursday), at 16:30.

Moderated by Lyubomira Popova.

Abstract:

While there seems to be a consensus among a wide and dispersed set of politicians, journalists, and even social media users that there is no police violence in Bulgaria, another set of actors—including activists, some journalists, and a psychologist from the Ministry of Interior—claims that police violence in the country is becoming a systemic problem.

In this presentation, I will lay out some preliminary results, challenges, and notes from an ongoing research project seeking to understand the meanings which a variety of stakeholders ascribe to “police violence” and the strategies through which these stakeholders make or unmake the category of “police violence” itself. In particular, this presentation focuses on some methodological and research design challenges from the ongoing study, based on work with news sources and reports from the regional prosecutor offices.
