23 January @ 16:30 - 18:30
Mariana Malinova (Pforzheimer Fellowship for Bulgarian Senior Scholars, Oct ’24 – Feb ‘25) will present her research on:
Constructing Ibn Taymiyya’s Conception of Translation
23 January 2025 (Thursday), at 16:30.
Moderated by: Nadezhda Alexandrova
Abstract: This presentation introduces an ongoing research project on the works of Ibn Taymiyya (1263–1328), an influential figure in Islamic theology and jurisprudence, and a leading representative of the Hanbali school within Sunni Islam. While Ibn Taymiyya’s contributions to theology and Islamic law have been extensively studied, this project seeks to investigate his work through the lens of translation studies—a different and previously unexplored perspective in the context of his intellectual legacy.
The presentation will outline the various stages of this research, including the identification and analysis of key texts from Ibn Taymiyya’s corpus that illuminate his views on translation. By critically examining these texts, it aims to situate Ibn Taymiyya within the broader history of Arabic translation discourse and to elucidate his theoretical and practical understanding of translation.
Through this critical engagement, the presentation will offer fresh insights into Ibn Taymiyya’s influence on Arabic intellectual traditions and contribute to a deeper understanding of translation as a conceptual and practical tool in Islamic scholarship.
