The Cases of Bulgarian Female Care Workers in Greece and Spain

on 1 December, 2022 (Thursday) at 16:30 h.

Moderated by Nadezhda Alexandrova.

Abstract:

Greece and Spain are countries with a particularly dynamic recent migration history that has sparked widespread scholarly interest. They are characterised by the existence of an important but under-regulated care work market where a significant proportion of migrants are employed. There are conditions for various types of discrimination, violations of labour rights and violence based on gender, nationality or ethnic identity towards care workers. Another important characteristic, applicable to both countries and of particular interest in the social sciences, is the strong mobilisation capacity and variety of social movements. These two major subjects, oppression and resistance, are generating great interest and new studies that explore the intersections between them through the research on migrant struggles for labour rights and against gender and ethno-racial discrimination.

The present project aims to analyse existing forms of formal and informal organisation of Bulgarian care workers in Greece and Spain, as well as the motivation and obstacles for building such organisation under similar conditions. It raises the issue of the unequal geographical distribution of mobilizations and organization of women who work in the care sector. Through the use of qualitative methodologies, the project aims to collect data that will help to build a comparative overview between Bulgarian migrants in both countries, between mobilised and unorganised women workers and between different generations of Bulgarian migrants in terms of struggles for their rights.”
