Ewan Short holds a PhD in Ancient History from Cardiff University, where his dissertation examined the life of the Bulgarian-born Byzantine empress Aikaterine Komnene. He also received an MA in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies from Cardiff, and a BA in History from the University of Oxford. Between 2019 and 2025, he taught Ancient and Medieval history at the universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Radboud (Nijmegen), and Cardiff, and held a fellowship at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul.

Dr. Short’s research focuses primarily on the history of women and the court in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, particularly in middle Byzantium. He is also interested in the history of the built environment of Istanbul. A monograph based upon his doctoral research is forthcoming with Liverpool University Press in 2027, and he is co-editor of a volume titled Dynasty and Court Culture in the Byzantine World and Beyond to be published by Palgrave Macmillan in the same year. Dr. Short has previously published on the Mangana area of Byzantine Constantinople and on the roles of royal women at the late Sasanian court.
