Ivan Simic has earned his PhD at University College London – School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Supervised by Dr Bojan Aleksov and Prof Susan Morrissey (in the initial stages of the project), his research explored Soviet Influences on Yugoslav Gender Policies. The project examined how and which Soviet models were transferred, adapted, and applied to Yugoslav practices. By looking at the main agents and channels of cultural transfer, he aimed to place Yugoslav cultural history into global perspective and to shed a new light on transnational circulation of Stalinist gender policies. This project is being published as a book with Palgrave in 2018.
Ivan Simic is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Carleton University, exploring gender policies towards Muslim communities in Eastern Europe. Before joining Carleton, he worked at the University of Calgary and had a fellowship at Yale University. He was also teaching at Goldsmiths, University of London as an associate lecturer.
He was awarded with numerous scholarships and grants, including two major prestigious scholarships, SSEES Foundation Scholarship and the Frederick Bonnart-Braunthal
Besides main interests in gender history of Eastern Europe, he is interested in youth studies and studies of religious minorities.
He holds MA in Modern Global History from the University of Bremen and Jacobs University Bremen in Germany, and BA in History from the University of Belgrade in Serbia.
