{"id":21436,"date":"2026-04-03T13:09:48","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cas.bg\/?p=21436"},"modified":"2026-04-07T16:25:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:25:52","slug":"sisecse-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cas.bg\/en\/sisecse-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"ACLS and CAS Name 14 Scholars to Participate in 2026 Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><h3 class=\"page-header__subtitle\">Fourteen Awardees Will Conduct Research and Writing at Two-Week Interdisciplinary Residency in Bulgaria Hosted by ACLS and the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia<\/h3>\n<p>The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS), is pleased to name\u00a014\u00a0scholars who will\u00a0participate\u00a0in the\u00a02026\u202f<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cas.bg\/en\/programme\/sisecse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe<\/a>\u202f<\/strong>(SISECSE).\u202fACLS will convene these leading scholars\u202ffrom Eastern Europe and North America for a two-week residency hosted by the <strong>American University in Bulgaria<\/strong> from<strong> June 3-19, 2026<\/strong> in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its fourth year, the\u00a0institute\u00a0offers scholars\u00a0the opportunity to dedicate time to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. During\u00a0SISECSE,\u00a0participants will also engage in a series of\u00a0group\u00a0discussions exploring the topic \u201cAutonomy, Institutions, and Transnational Networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a02026\u00a0scholars are working on a variety of research topics, across\u00a0a wide range of\u00a0geographic areas and fields of study, including\u00a0the preservation of green spaces and historic architecture in Sofia;\u00a0the comparison\u00a0of\u00a0early\u00a0twentieth-century\u00a0military occupations in the Balkans;\u00a0abortion\u00a0activism\u00a0in Poland;\u00a0and\u00a0community-building among the Roma population in Southeastern Europe.\u00a0This year\u2019s participants\u00a0represent\u00a0institutions across Eastern Europe and the United States, including\u00a0University of Ostrava,\u00a0University of Tirana,\u00a0University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and\u00a0Texas State University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acls.org\/recent-fellows\/?_fellow_year=2026&amp;_fellow_program=38353\">Learn more about the 2026 Scholars and Their Projects<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Summer Institute offers scholars from Eastern Europe and the United States\u00a0a great opportunity\u00a0to meet face-to-face, learn from one another\u2019s perspectives, develop their\u00a0networks,\u00a0 and\u00a0make progress on their own research projects,\u201d said\u00a0ACLS Program Officer Mark Silver. \u201cACLS is grateful to the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia for their\u00a0continued\u00a0partnership in convening leading scholars of East Central and Southeastern Europe in Bulgaria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Institute for\u00a0the\u00a0Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe is made possible by a generous donation from Carl and Betty Pforzheimer.
