It led to the independence of Greek Kingdom, further autonomy of the Danubian principalities and a new balance of power in the Balkans and the Caucasus. This seminar will analyse the conduct of the war and its legacy for the Eastern Question from Ottoman, Russian and European perspectives. Questions include: What was Russian strategy in this war and how did it differ from previous wars? What were the main challenges and realities of post-Napoleonic warfare for the Ottomans? Why were Russian military authorities reluctant to use Balkan irregulars in this war? Were the Bulgar volunteers similar to the Greek klephti? What was the military value of Ottoman irregulars? Why was Russia more successful than the Ottomans in using Kurdish tribes along the Caucasian borderlands? We will also discuss how different historiographies treated the war.

Moderated by Victor Petrov.

Candan Badem (Gerda Henkel Fellow, Oct ‘23 – Jul ‘24) will give his presentation on: The Russo-Ottoman War of 1828-29 and its Impact on the Balkans and the Caucasus on…
