An After- History of Art" on 12 May 2016 (Thursday) at 16:30h at CAS Conference Hall.

Summary:

In the present research on the view from Bulgaria to Western European and American art in the 1960s I suggest considering the artistic contacts – realised or missing – of the art scene in our country.
The issues of mutual artistic influences, of the means of their happening – international exhibitions, critical, historical and theoretical texts (either in the original or translated), "travelling" reproductions of art works, long-lasting or short-lived international art milieus – today are the focus of attention of researchers from various fields. With the information milieu boom and in the conditions of the global network, the comparative perspective is sought by researchers and expected by readers. It destabilizes the known historicising narratives and presents both an internal and external point of view towards art events, tendencies and works, which so far have been presented from the position of a national history of art.
The publications in "Izkustvo" [Art] magazine, which will be a focus of attention, provide not only information for the artistic events in our country and elsewhere but also a possibility for understanding the officially regulated and built culture topography. I try to imagine and discuss the position of these artists by reading and analysing interviews and articles in which they themselves mention impressions from and influences of foreign art, as well as researching personal archives, even though with the necessary adjustments to this testimonial discourse.
The research within this project is designed in the broad field of visual studies, with an interdisciplinary profile.
Arts defined as applied as well as industrial design deserve special attention. The fact that the biggest part of the visiting exhibitions from Europe in Bulgaria (from both sides of the "Iron Curtain") used to be from this artistic field was ignored until recently. The so called "applied" sphere was considered to be relatively marginal (compared with painting, sculpture, monumental arts) and neutral with a view to the ideological content. The international exchange in the field of applied arts and industrial design is one of the main areas of the research.
The differences in the reception of art beyond the "Iron Curtain" is a key area of the study. Differences between the comments on French and American art in the 1960s clearly stand out. In the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s the competitive situation on the art scene was distinctly felt not only on "the front line" of the "Cold War" but also in another way – between Western Europe and the USA. While the international appearance of American art was generally associated with abstract painting and Pop art, which were pejoratively called "avant-garde" and "decadent", the prestige of French art was approved of / accredited by the Bulgarian audience due to the glory of the Paris School in the decades prior to World War II (though that glory had started to fade after the War), the leftist artists, close to the French Communist Party, and the political works by Pablo Picasso, among which "Guernica" (1937) and "The dove of peace" (1949).
The study within the frameworks of this project has a contextual character.
The research mobilises knowledge from the fields of political and social studies for the contextual analyses and comments.

Prof. Irina Genova will present her research proposal on the topic: “The Look from Bulgaria at Art Beyond the Iron Curtain during the 1960’s.
