Its high circulation seems justified. The film versions of these serving the political status quo narratives also get the attention of the audience. It is surprising that at present, after the end of the regimes, the authors of the above mentioned stories are presented in the literary publicity namely by them. Moreover, their contemporary interpretation tries to overcome the view that they are simply instruments for ideological impact.
The paper is dedicated to the explanation of this paradoxical success. It is divided into two parts. The first one is theoretically oriented. It studies the relationships between the detective and spy fiction. The emphasis is laid on the criticism of the prevailing paradigm in the investigation of these two genres: the view that they are products of modernity. In contrast to that paradigm, we maintain that the mystery prose, on one hand, is connected to modernity but, on the other, it contains the premodern belief in the indisputable truth, attained without the help of institutions and legitimate procedures, which is surprisingly revealed at the final scene when the detective says who is the murderer. However, the situation with the spy novels is not the same – here all the values and events are privatized by the state.
During the Cold War crime and spy fiction coexist in the western literature. In Eastern Europe the spy story dominates because, according to the ideology of the communist regimes ruling over that region, there is no place for the criminal act in the socialist society. People live in the fairest place in the world. Moreover, the personal aspect of the crime action, which plays an important role in the detective novels, cannot be determinant – most property belongs to the state, i.e., to the regime, so every encroachment on it has a political sense. The crime can come from elsewhere – from the enemies of the system: agencies of enemy's secret service, citizens rejecting the ruling ideology, as are the personages of the spy narrative.
The second part of the paper is concentrated on this genre. The attentive reading of two popular series of novels, written by Andrei Gulyashki and Bogomil Rainov, will notify that the ideological element in them is not emphasized, it doesn't irritate. The public success of the spy stories by Rainov and Guliashki can be interpreted as a consequence of the circumstance that they hide their genre, behaving as crime fiction plots. At the end of the paper another reason for that success is proposed. May be the citizen of the People's Republic of Bulgaria likes the spy novels not because they lead him into a reality which differs from his own but because they speak to him about his proper reality. A reality where everyone is Mister Nobody before the social system 1, as the characters of Guliashki and Rainov are in relation to the narrative situations; where one is not sure who is in front of him – a friend or a police informer, as the intelligence officer in the spy story who will lose the game if he begins to believe that there is no hidden aspect of what happens to him; where everything is deprived of authenticity and is a scenario of the invisible hand of the power.

1Title of a novel by Bogomil Rainov (Rainov, Bogomil. Райнов, Богомил. Господин Никой, aka Mister Nobody (English title). София: Български писател, 1985.
